TRUCKING INDUSTRY * USA - Freight Jobs Grow in Weak Employment Market

* DC - Broader numbers show poor job growth may drag down consumer spending

Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Joseph Bonney -Jun 4, 2010: -- Transportation hiring inched up in May as overall weakness in private job creation was offset by a surge in temporary government employment of census workers... Seasonally adjusted estimates in the Labor Department’s monthly employment report showed trucking employment in May totaled 1,231,100, a net increase of 2,000 jobs from April... Employment in support activities for transportation increased by 2,800 to 543,400, while warehousing and storage jobs increased 2,100 to 645,800. * Florida - Trucking industry picking up, but few new jobs available - “Prices are up 30 to 40 percent and you still can’t find a truck,” said Rob Hooper Jr., Atlantic Logistics Inc.

The unexpected upswing in trucking orders, up nearly 300 percent last month from April 2009, trucking customers are spending more on transportation and will likely pass those increased costs onto the buyers of everything from produce to electronics... One customer wanted eight trucks to move goods from the Savannah, Ga., area to Richmond, Va., in two days, but Hooper said the best he could find the customer was two to three trucks per day... Tom Nightingale, spokesman and chief marketing officer for Con-way Freight, said, even when trucking companies want to add new drivers, it will be tricky, he said. The country’s aging demographic, along with the job’s long hours and nights away from home, hinders recruiting... Considering truckers face at least $1,000 worth of tag fees and taxes and a truck with about 500,000 miles costs about $19,000, potential drivers will find it difficult to afford to get on the road, said Bonnie Logue, president of Open Freight Inc... * DC - Hourly driver pay remains rare

Claire McCaskill recommended researching hourly pay’s effect on trucker safety at an April 28 Senate hearing on motor carrier safety... Pay by the mile or load is the norm for long-haul drivers, although companies may pay hourly for certain conditions, such as detention time or loading. While they did not examine the merits of hourly pay, the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration completed research on the relationship between driver compensation and safety in 2002... “Higher pay produces superior safety performance for firms and for drivers,” the study concluded...
