* USA - Long-haul truck driver: May soon be a thing of the past ?

* California - Elon Musk wants to replace truck drivers with "Fleet Managers"

(Autopilot Saves Model S. Video by Joshua Brown - Apr 5, 2016: Tesla Model S autopilot saved the car autonomously from a side collision from a boom lift truck)

--- Tesla CEO Elon Musk has some bad news for country singers: the legendary occupation of the long-haul truck driver may soon be a thing of the past. Instead, the future of overground shipping may be controlled by autonomous trucks, guided to their destinations by “fleet managers” in remote locations... Tesla announced its plans for autonomous semi trucks (as well as pickups) back in July, but Musk hasn’t said much about it since. That changed on Friday, when during a live phone interview on CNBC, he talked about the concept of autonomous overground shipping and how it may completely change the truck driver’s role... Musk said getting all drivers out from behind the wheel might actually be safer and more productive... “I think it’ll actually be a big safety improvement because you get a lot of accidents when drivers are tired behind the wheel,” he said... While that may already be legal in Texas, it’s going to take a lot more testing before the trucks hit every highway...

TRUCKERS * USA: Among most sought workers

* Alabama - Truckers, registered nurses among most sought after workers in state, nationwide

-- While trucking industry revenues reached an all-time high and some hourly wages in the industry were reportedly increased, truckers remain some of the most sought after workers in Alabama and nationwide, according to data. The Alabama Department of Labor reported 8,200 online advertisements were made for truck drivers, registered nurses and supervisors combined in April in the state. Despite the 3.4 million drivers who worked in trucking in 2014. In Alabama, the state labor department showed cargo and freight agents in the trucking industry make an average $46,605 annually. Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers make an average $39,026 with some college experience, while logisticians with a Bachelor’s degree or higher make an average $81,276... TRUCKERS JOB OPPORTUNITIES * USA: Oilfield employee cutbacks may benefit long-haul trucking

* Pennsylvania - Oil companies offered lucrative, short-haul jobs

-- Oil company job cuts that cost machinery operator Drew Sanford his spot at Halliburton Co. are shaping up as a boom for truckers desperate for big-rig drivers... Equipped with a commercial license, the 30-year-old Sanford left North Dakota and landed at Oklahoma City-based Stevens Trucking Co. He is sometimes on the road as long as four days at a stretch, but the working conditions are good, he said, and “I'll probably just stick here for a while” ... His career path is one that his new industry would like to see repeated. As a resurgent economy fuels demand for cargo shipments and sharpens competition for workers, mass firings in the oil patch amid the collapse in crude markets may help trucking companies ease an estimated shortage of 35,000 long-haul drivers... Attracting and retaining drivers is one of the biggest challenges for long-haul trucking companies, which can have annual driver turnover of more than 100 percent, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Lee Klaskow and Talon Custer... With the global oil industry poised to cut 50,000 or more jobs, over-the-road truckers could see 10,000 to 12,000 drivers become available for work, according to Brad Delco, a Stephens Inc. analyst in Little Rock ... Oil companies offered lucrative, short-haul jobs that let employees get home to family and friends at night. That added to recruiting hurdles for traditional long-haul operators, according to Stephens' Delco... TRUCKERS JOB * USA & Canada: & DRIVER SHORTAGE

* Driver shortage: Many are called, fewer are chosen

Overdrive, by Kevin Jones -September 02, 2013: -- The last capacity crunch, roughly 2004-08, is considered to have been a great time for the industry by some participants... Steve Williams, chief executive officer of Maverick USA, looks no further than his bottom line to know that the balance of transportation supply and demand again has shifted in favor of carriers, even if it’s not a repeat of 2004... Maverick, a longtime flatbed carrier that has expanded by adding specialized glass and refrigerated divisions, is “almost back” to its pre-recession seated truck count... Williams calls 2012’s turnover “normal” at 58 percent, which is well below the industry average for large truckload carriers – typically about 100 percent. Maverick also grew by 250 trucks, its best total for a year without an acquisition. Along with financial and safety performances that were “stellar,” the year was the company’s best ever for recruiting, he says... By this summer, the fleet was reduced by 105 trucks, while turnover was up slightly. However, recruiting statistics are “unbelievably different,” as Williams details... Year-to-date in 2012: 16,316 leads processed, with 674 drivers hired; YTD 2013: 30,210 leads – or nearly double 2012’s to-date total – yet only 559 hires, or 115 fewer...

* Texas - Want to be a highly successful carrier? Pay your employees more

Austin,TXS,USA -Today's Trucking/Heavy Duty Trucking -Aug 29, 2013: -- According to a 2013 Texas Trucking Industry Study, highly successful companies (HSS) offer more benefits to recruit and retain drivers when compared to all other trucking companies... In terms of recruitment, 91 percent of the HSS regards driver referrals as useful, compared to 66 percent of all other companies. The study also found HSS companies are twice as likely as all others to pay referral bonuses to referring drivers and the HSS companies that do pay bonuses appear to pay higher bonuses than all other companies:
- The average HSS bonus was $532 per driver referral compared to $321 for all others... As for benefits and pay structure, HSS companies appear to be more likely to offer these benefits tracked in the report than all other companies in 2013:

°  Driver recognition awards: 67% vs. 45%
°  Bonus-pay for accident-free driving: 62% vs. 44%
°  Health care insurance: 57% vs. 34%
°  Longevity bonus: 52% vs. 37%
°  Commissions on sales: 35% vs. 22%
°  Fuel surcharge pay: 33% vs. 21%
°  Signing bonuses: 24% vs. 19% 401(k)
°  Retirement plan: 33% vs. 14%

Eighty-six percent of successful companies also used use contract drivers, compared to 42 percent of all other companies. Still, it's good to mix it up: 76 percent of HSS companies employ a mix of both contract drivers and employee drivers, compared to only 30 percent of all other companies... To qualify as "highly successful," companies had to report revenue growth in 2012, a net profit margin of at least 10 percent in 2012, and a minimum of 11 drivers. The survey includes responses from 300 trucking company owners, CEOs and senior executives at Texas-based trucking companies...

* Virginia - Trucking Industry still facing driver shortage.

(Photo by andrewweigel - Oil trucks in New Jersey belonging to Mitchell Supreme Fuel Co.)
Arlington,VA,USA -Politix/Topix, by Dain Fitzgerald -Sep 2, 2013: -- It was reported over a year that the trucking industry was in a bad way, unable to find replacements for a generation of drivers set to retire. That problem remains, informs NPR... The American Trucking Association says thousands of truckers are still needed to tackle the nation's oil and natural gas boom turning much of the heartland into a patchwork of newly prosperous cities and towns. But while bad news for the industry as a whole, it's good news for truckers who are on the upside of a bidding war to attract drivers... Entry-level pay is between $40,000 and $50,000, claims aspiring trucker James Stone of Pasadena, Texas... Unfortunately, say those tasked with hiring, many would-be drivers can't pass a drug test or have checkered driving histories. And the long stints away from home, while somewhat flexible, deter some applicants despite the relatively strong starting pay... The worker shortage isn't helped by recent Department of Transportation safety regulations mandating a shortening of the work week from from 82 to 72 hours. It acts a brake, so to speak, on the monetary incentives that might entice some young drivers on to the roads...

* New Zealand - Truck Drivers' Union: "Dangerous work practices putting drivers at risk"

Tolaga Bay,North Island,New Zealand -The New Zealand Herald -21 May 2013: -- The truck drivers' union has blamed dangerous work practices for putting drivers at risk. The comment comes after yesterday's collision between two logging trucks near Tolaga Bay which killed one driver and left the other seriously injured...   Transport and logistics secretary for FIRST Union, Karl Andersen, said the industry was structured in a way that encouraged unsafe practices. "Many truck drivers are owner-operators and their margins are constantly squeezed, leading to drivers taking short cuts, running bald tires, breaking driver regulations, and in some cases using stimulants to get through. Fatigue is a very real issue for many drivers'' ...  Mr Andersen said Australia's road safety law was stronger, and a recent law change had stopped drivers' pay systems from incentivising dangerous practice... He said drivers worked long hours, and shouldn't also have to work in an unsafe environment...

TRUCKING JOBS * Australia - Struggling truckies plan red ribbon campaign

Truck drivers are walking away from the transport industry and leaders say this situation is dire

Canberra,Australia -ABC Rural -10 May 2010: ... The President of the National Road Freighters Association, Mick Pattel, says his organisation will launch a campaign in the coming weeks to fight back at increasing costs to registration, revised fatigue laws and changes to the tracking of trucks... He says the transport industry can't continue to operate in its current form if changes aren't made, and his association's Red Ribbon campaign will help highlight this. "What it'll involve is everyone in the industry who is unhappy with the way the government is treating the transport industry to tie a red ribbon on their vehicle, mainly on their mirrors, to show their discontent, and from there on, positive action will be taken in incremental periods after that," he says.

TRUCKERS' JOBS * USA - UPS Thinks Out of the Box on Driver Training

Driver training is crucial for Atlanta-based UPS, which employs 99,000 U.S. drivers and says it will need to hire 25,000 over the next five years

Landover,MD,USA -The New York Times, by Jennifer Levitz -7 April 2010: -- Vexed that some 30% of driver candidates flunk its traditional training, United Parcel Service Inc. is moving beyond the classroom to ready its rookies for the road. In the place of books and lectures are videogames, a contraption that simulates walking on ice and an obstacle course around an artificial village. Based on results so far, the world's largest package-delivery company is convinced that 20-somethings—the bulk of UPS driver recruits—respond best to high-tech instruction and a chance to hone skills... DAC Report * USA - To Cause More Lost Jobs for American Truckers

Are the CSA2010 and the truck driver’s DAC Report combining forces to weed out thousands of experienced, higher paid drivers ... ???

(Video from Youtube, by TruckerDogfish -9 Aug 2008: "American Trucker" Northeast Truckin Video)

Dunnellon,FL,USA -Ask The Trucker -20 Jan 2010: -- Thousands of truckers in the United States lost their jobs in 2009... Is the proposed program, CSA2010 and the truck driver’s DAC Report combining forces to weed out thousands of experienced, higher paid drivers to bring in new drivers at a much lower pay scale?... Is this an economic attack against American drivers? Many believe that it is... One trucking company has stated that FMCSA expects 175,000 driver jobs will be lost when CSA2010 is implemented... Working very quietly in the background, it has been reported that several trucking companies are having safety meetings telling some drivers that the FMCSA is planning to do a three year background check on all truck drivers DAC Report, state and company records. Based on the information found, the driver will be given a point rating. Drivers found to have three or more violations of any kind will be given an unfair rating and the trucking company will be forced to terminate the driver from their employment... A point can be assessed against the driver in relation to the proposed BMI (body mass index) of the driver and the other related point scale within the new CSA2010 regulations. It is our understanding that this data collection against American truckers will be complete by July, 2010... Furthermore, the large majority of this data will be provided by DAC Services, the corrupt agency which allows false information to remain on drivers reports...

* Who (or What) is DAC Services?

Anchorage,AK,USA -The Cyber Truck Stop -20 Jan 2010: -- An old DAC press release describes the report categories as follows: "In addition to transportation-specific services, DAC provides criminal records, motor vehicle records, social security number verifications, credit reports, drug/alcohol test histories and workers' compensation and injury reports." The new HireRight DAC Trucking Solutions has expanded on that list but the most important report, the report most requested by subscribers, is the DAC Employment History File which will include information such as number of accidents, reason for quitting or being terminated, rehire eligibility, type of driving, trailer types pulled, commodities hauled, etc...
