TRUCKING DEADLIEST JOB * Australia: University Report

* NSW - Most truckies are working more than 50 hours a week
--- Most truckies are working more than 50 hours a week and 42% wouldn't report a safety breach in fear they'd lose their jobs, a new report has found... The report highlights the overburden of some regulation, the number of aging drivers, lack of training for new drivers and the uneven balance of accountability... Dr O'Neill, a professor at University of New South Wales, is one of two authors behind the study... In a statement, she said drivers experienced very different degrees of safety at work... Fellow author Professor Louise Thornthwaite from Macquarie University said the research showed a 'blame the victim' culture in the industry... Data used in the report showed more than 2500 people died in truck crashes across Australia from 2005-2014... The report was launched at a safety summit hosted by the Transport Workers Union in Sydney on Friday... The release of the report came on the same day New South Wales police raided Farragher Logistics in western Sydney... The company owned a B-Double that crashed into a crane on Sydney's M1 on Tuesday, causing a major fire and blocking three lanes... Police told 9 News Sydney they found fatigue infringements and seatbelt issues during the raid at Farragher's Blacktown facilities...

* Kashmir - Trucker injured in petrol bomb attack dies; violence erupts in Valley

-- One of the two persons injured in Udhampur petrol bomb attack on a Kashmir-bound truck died today after battling for life for nine days, sparking fresh protest in some areas in the Valley, even as the stringent Public Safety Act was slapped against five of the accused... Former J&K CM Omar Abdullah attacked the BJP and its allies over the incident and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi as to who would be blamed for the death of Zahid Ahmed... Zahid, the conductor of the truck targeted in the October 9 attack, died this morning at Safdurjung Hospital in Delhi, where he was admitted with 74 per cent burns...

* ‘Truckers without borders’ sustain Syria

-- Syrian truck drivers are the only ones who maintain good relations with commanders of the regime, the Free Syrian Army (FSA), Islamic State (IS) and Democratic Union Party (PYD) forces, all while constantly monitoring the clashes... An interview with a truck driver working in Syria shows how truck drivers are the only parties permitted to pass freely through the country's violent internal borders... In the four-year Syrian civil war, 250,000 people have been killed and 4 million of them have become refugees in neighboring countries. Millions of them are struggling to survive in a country divided four ways between the Bashar al-Assad regime, the opposition, IS and the PYD. Wherever they live, these Syrians meet their daily needs of flour, medicine, baby food, fuel and clothing through merchants and truck drivers who are the only ones who can cross the internal borders... It is lethal trade for the drivers. They navigate essential, fine points of survival: Without distinction, they maintain good relations with the entire gamut of factions and religiously keep track of daily clashes and events on the ground. Their biggest advantage is the constant need of all fighting parties...

-- Salim is one of millions of Syrians who is a victim of civil war. His family lives in Aleppo. He doesn’t have a permanent living place because he makes his living trucking through a country whose economy has collapsed. Like many of his colleagues, he has faced death many times. Salim’s story is the story of how people remaining in Syria obtain their survival needs like food, fuel and other basics and the trade relations between enemy groups. Syrians who have decided to stay obtain their flour, medicine and fuel thanks to truckers like Salim who can enter any zone, no matter who controls it. Syrian truckers are probably the only group who can cross the internal borders of different groups... Truckers are not very talkative. They don’t want to attract attention. Only Salim and a businessman who goes by MU shared the details of the “lethal commerce” on condition we don’t use their full names. Their biggest advantage is that all fighters, wherever they operate, have one thing in common: They have to take bread home. MU explained, “Trade routes are never closed fully in any area. At the end, we carry flour, pasta and oil. When we take goods to one area, families of people fighting there also benefit” ... There are other fine points to keep in mind when shuttling through internal borders controlled by enemy groups. For example, truckers constantly monitor the safety of their routes through people they know. To find goods and to carry them, they have to maintain good relations with commanders in every zone. MU said, “They inform us when they seize commercial commodities. That way, they make money and we get goods to sell” ... A security guard in a Mercedes escorts trucks that carry valuable goods from Esselame to the Kurdish Afrin region. This Mercedes is the ticket that allows the trucks to pass unhindered through areas controlled by various groups. When fighting groups see the Mercedes, they know that the trucks carry goods that won’t be touched and let them pass... Although production has slowed down enormously because of the civil war, it hasn’t fully come to a standstill in main cities like Aleppo and Damascus. Still, there is no electricity in most parts of the country. Small workshops produce goods, from textiles to car generators. As they can’t be exported to Turkey, Iraq or other countries, they are sold inside the country. Telephone networks are not working. Merchants and truckers learn what is produced through word of mouth from local commanders. MU said, “This is commerce with the conditions of 100 years ago” ... The regime supporters, IS and the PYD have set up their own taxation systems in the areas they control. This tax is a kind of life insurance for merchants and truckers. For example, in the PYD area, if you are carrying tea and sugar, you pay $200 for each truck... Truckers say the system is different in the IS area: “If you are transiting through [IS] area, you pay small amounts. But if you are delivering to their area, they determine a tax based on the type of good, its value and identity of the merchant. Assad, [IS] and PYD have established systems, but not the FSA. The FSA has too many factions, and there is no established taxation system [there.]” ...

-- Truck driver Brian Williams has filmed the moment a huge snake slithered across his windscreen and driver’s side window, trying to find a way inside the vehicle, as he drove on a highway in the USA. ... While his newfound internet fame took him by surprise, it was something far more predictable that landed him in hot water with his employer, Georgia-based Brown Trucking Company... Brian Williams said  "... specially my brothers and sisters who are Professional Truck Drivers... I was fired yesterday from job because of the videos ... The reason? Operating a hand held device while driving a commercial vehicle"... In closing Brian said, "Everything happens for a reason right? Maybe there will be a silver lining" ...

--  For about 2,500 transporters in the Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, arguably Asia’s biggest transport hub in outer Delhi, Gunjeet Singh Sangha’s name has been nothing short of an insurance. He says his name ‘Sangha’--- it is painted in white bold letters on about 10,000 trucks--- ensures no problems with the traffic police or the transport department. He gets hundreds of calls for help from other transporters and drivers and the requests are always granted... “It is not an easy task. This place is an area of darkness,” says Singh... It takes a trucker’s resolve to survive in this transport hub. It is home to thousands of truck drivers, sex workers, gamblers, workshops and truck artists. The roads here are nothing but crater- ridden dust tracks; the gutters overflow and mounds of garbage can be spotted at every street corner... Most walls are painted with slogans promoting the use of condoms. In fact, about 10,000 condoms are picked out daily from boxes that have been put up at several shops...

... The threat of sexually transmitted disease (STD) is still alarming. Several NGOs work in Transport Nagar with drivers and sex workers... “The community (truckers) continues to be at a high risk of HIV infection. They stay away from home for months. There is still a high prevalence of unsafe sex and drug addiction among them,” says Amit Ranjan Chaudhary, who heads a programme ‘Targeted Intervention’ launched by CSR wing of Apollo Tyres in Transport Nagar... The Apollo health care centre ---- its entrance has a plastic box fitted on the wall which has condoms for free distribution—is visited by 30 people every day. The clinic has distributed small white boxes with messages on safe sex printed on them to various roadside dhabas, paan shops, etc to keep condoms for sale. Chaudhary says about 10, 000 condoms are sold every day here...

 -- McNeight Express Inc. commercial truck driver Thomas "T.J." Jackson did an eight-month stint in Iraq for a defense contractor in 2003... He drove to and from Kuwait and Baghdad in convoys of up to 50 trucks, including military escorts for protection... He finished his tour a week before Saddam Hussein was captured... He's witnessed trucks exploding from roadside IEDs (improvised explosive devices) and had small-arms fire headed his way several times... In one incident, he said a supply truck parked at a base he was at caught a rocket meant for a soldiers compound. The trucker was sleeping in the cab berth and was injured... We were told to stop giving out candy and water to the kids along the highway when we were stopped," Jackson said. "The Army didn't want one of those kids to throw a grenade under our trucks" ... He acknowledged the hard part was that he didn't like being an occasional target for insurgents in Iraq... Despite the close calls, the work was steady and fulfilling, he said...

A passerby intervened in the highway fight and put a stop to the abusive road rager, left, picking on a 65-year-old trucker driver, pictured on the right... A man is seen attacking the driver of a tracker trailer after his car is hit during an fender bender. Later the man filming the encounter punches out the attacker... The dispute was captured on a profanity-laced video by a Illinois tattoo artist, Tommy Solis, who confronted a man over his treatment of a 65-year-old truck driver... The trucker identified as Gary Adair on the ground, clutching a tire iron in self-defense... Marlyand Transportation Authority spokeswoman Cheryl Sparks says their investigators are looking into the incident, but not a single traffic camera picked up the alleged assault... They first saw the viral video early this week being unaware of any violence on the roads overnight Saturday because no one called 911...

* New Zealand - Truck Drivers' Union: "Dangerous work practices putting drivers at risk"

Tolaga Bay,North Island,New Zealand -The New Zealand Herald -21 May 2013: -- The truck drivers' union has blamed dangerous work practices for putting drivers at risk. The comment comes after yesterday's collision between two logging trucks near Tolaga Bay which killed one driver and left the other seriously injured...   Transport and logistics secretary for FIRST Union, Karl Andersen, said the industry was structured in a way that encouraged unsafe practices. "Many truck drivers are owner-operators and their margins are constantly squeezed, leading to drivers taking short cuts, running bald tires, breaking driver regulations, and in some cases using stimulants to get through. Fatigue is a very real issue for many drivers'' ...  Mr Andersen said Australia's road safety law was stronger, and a recent law change had stopped drivers' pay systems from incentivising dangerous practice... He said drivers worked long hours, and shouldn't also have to work in an unsafe environment...

Since the horrific crash near Ilbilbie in early 2012, Mr Corcoran has struggled to cope... Diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder and anxiety, Mr Corcoran no longer drives trucks for a living... But that doesn't mean he hasn't been busy... Spurred on by the death of his friend, Mr Corcoran has spent the past seven months asking fellow truckies to sign a petition calling on the Federal Government to introduce a danger money allowance into the truck driver award agreement...

Auckland,NZ -Stuff.NZ, by WILLIAM MACE -7 Jan 2013: -- Proposed changes to the vehicle licensing system could mean the loss of up to 2000 jobs and reduced oversight of the safety of trucks on New Zealand’s roads... A Government decision on possible changes to the private car Warrant of Fitness [WoF] and commercial vehicle Certificate of Fitness [CoF] regimes was expected to be made public in the next two months... Inspectors that were either on the payroll of the trucking company they’re inspecting, or were only interested in declining CoF licences in order to inflate subsequent repair bills, could flourish under the new rules... Walsh said abolishing the prohibition on inspectors doubling as repairers would mean VTNZ would have to cut jobs, locations and services... According to the Ministry of Transport as many as 2000 people could lose employment with the changes to both WoF and CoF rules...

* Victoria - Coles truckies 'under pressure to speed' 

Glen Iris,VIC,Australia -The Australian -May 30, 2012: -- More than half of Coles truck drivers believe they're under pressure to drive too fast... National secretary of the Transport Workers Union (TWU), Tony Sheldon, today released the findings of a national survey of 715 drivers. It found 55 per cent of drivers surveyed in the retailer's supply chain admitted to feeling pressure to drive too fast... The trucking industry average is 26 per cent... The report also found that 82 per cent of drivers surveyed in the Coles supply chain had considered leaving as a result of client pressures... TWU NSW secretary, Wayne Forno, said an average Coles driver spent almost 400 hours each year in unpaid waiting times... A protest of truck drivers will coincide with the TWU National Council in Sydney today...

DANGEROUS JOB * USA - Slow Down To Get Around: Campaign Urges Safety For Trash Collectors

Aside from being a dirty, tiring and often thankless job, trash collectors have one of the deadliest jobs in America...

Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection -30 Sept 2011: ... In fact, solid-waste collection employees have the fifth highest fatality rate of any occupation in the United States, due largely to impatient and distracted drivers... A newly energized campaign from the National Solid Waste Management Association (NSWMA), called “Slow Down To Get Around,” urges motorists to apply the same care passing a stopped sanitation truck or mail truck as they would a school bus that’s not flashing red lights... The NSWMA isn’t looking to impose new traffic laws, only to remind drivers to be more careful around solid waste workers and service vehicles. In 2010, 26 solid waste collection workers were killed on the job, an increase of 30 percent from 2009... The Slow Down To Get Around campaign hopes to reduce these numbers by encouraging motorists to reduce or eliminate distracted driving, and pass all stopped service vehicles with care...

The north has deteriorated over just a few months, showing how quickly Taliban influence is spreading in a once peaceful area. Local officials say the Taliban are establishing a shadow government along the dilapidated road that ultimately could prevent vital supplies carried in hundreds of trucks every week from reaching the military. It also raises the danger that the supplies could end up in militant hands as fodder for suicide attacks...

Meanwhile, Quinn-Judge said, the newly paved highway and bridge leading into Central Asia essentially means "the jihadists' own route has been reopened"...

Abdul Razaq Yaqoubi, the Kunduz police chief, said the convoys have made a tenuous situation worse. The Americans, he complained, tell no one when the trucks are coming through or how many to expect and the police forces are understaffed...

In Baghlan, Zalmay Mangal, the province's deputy police chief, said violence worsened right around the same time that the supplies started moving through in large numbers. He does not blame the convoys, but he and the Kunduz police chief said the truck traffic is a tempting target...

"One of the main reasons (for the new insecurity) is the NATO and coalition supply convoys," said Yaqoubi. The other reasons, he added, are poverty and anger at the government...

Mangal said more coalition troops could help; McChrystal and the Germans prefer to emphasize building up local Afghan forces.

DANGEROUS JOB * Ireland - Hauliers get Calais warning

Irish haulage companies that use the port of Calais as a gateway to mainland Europe have been warned to be on the look out for illegal immigrants

Dublin,Ireland -HGV -13 May 2009: -- ... The warning comes just days after more than 100 illegal immigrants, desperate to reach Britain, caused chaos as they attempted to smuggle themselves onto lorries that were stuck in a traffic jam on the way to the Calais ferry terminal... The immigrants became desperate to leave France after officials in that country launched a crackdown in shanty towns in the Calais area... (See too: Truckers, dangerous job...) As the immigrants lined the side of the A26, the truck drivers attempted to warn them off, shouting at them to keep away... One lorry driver from the UK, who was caught in the slow-moving traffic said that he had to check his vehicle at the ferry terminal to make sure none of the illegals had got on board, as there is a stiff fine levied for transporting them... TRUCKER, DANGEROUS JOB * France - Hundreds of illegal immigrants armed with knives and crowbars swarm round Calais trucks heading for Britain

Desperation: It's just another week in the relentless assault on Britain's borders...

Calais,France -Mail On Line (UK), by Tom Rawstorne -11 May 2009: -- Just half a mile from the ferry terminal in Calais, a UK-bound lorry driver at the weekend makes the mistake of slowing down to a crawl on the A26 Autoroute des Anglais dual carriageway... At a signal from their fixers, around 100 illegal migrants arise from the wooded verge where they have been concealed and try to swarm aboard the vehicle, and others behind, desperate to find somewhere inside or underneath they could stow away to reach the UK... So intent are they to get to what they see as a land of easy asylum, council housing and generous benefits that they risk being crushed by the trucks' wheels. Some carry crowbars or knives to try to prise open a chink in the lorries' defences...This time the traffic speeds up again and none gets aboard. The migrants melt back into the woodland to await the next chance of an ambush... In a nearby industrial area, on the Rue des Garennes, a dozen stowaways were discovered last week hiding inside an empty tanker... Workers were about to fill it with concentrated sulphuric acid when they heard muffled cries coming from within. Sure you will get the occasional, but for the most part they are courteous providing you dont act like an idiot. I think the biggest problem is fatigue... The time pressure causes them to drive more than they legally should at times...

USA -From: forums.motortrend.com, by Jahmills -26 Feb 2007: -- I was driving on the PA turnpike last night, in the middle of a snow & ice storm, and got passed by three big rigs (they were in the right lane!)... First they were going about 75mph, the road was very slick, my DSC light was blinking constantly, and second I watched a car merge in between two of these trucks where there was clearly not enough room. I was thinking about these drivers probably needing to keep on schedule and having to deal with idiots in cars, but they were also driving too fast for the conditions. It was a crazy situation on the roads here last night and I couldn't wait to get off that highway, I was actually scared, and I'm never scared when I'm driving...

Truck Driving I * USA - The Deadliest Occupation ?

USA -forums.motortrend.com -27 Feb 2007: -- Talking about total number of workplace deaths then, indeed, truck driving is the deadliest job. (See right)

But, in terms of fatalities rate per 100,000 people, in other words, your odds of being killed on the job, truck driving doesn't even make the top ten: (See left)
