DANGEROUS JOB * Ireland - Hauliers get Calais warning
Irish haulage companies that use the port of Calais as a gateway to mainland Europe have been warned to be on the look out for illegal immigrants
Dublin,Ireland -HGV -13 May 2009: -- ... The warning comes just days after more than 100 illegal immigrants, desperate to reach Britain, caused chaos as they attempted to smuggle themselves onto lorries that were stuck in a traffic jam on the way to the Calais ferry terminal... The immigrants became desperate to leave France after officials in that country launched a crackdown in shanty towns in the Calais area... (See too: Truckers, dangerous job...) As the immigrants lined the side of the A26, the truck drivers attempted to warn them off, shouting at them to keep away... One lorry driver from the UK, who was caught in the slow-moving traffic said that he had to check his vehicle at the ferry terminal to make sure none of the illegals had got on board, as there is a stiff fine levied for transporting them...
