* Germany - Manufacturer MAN in Bribery Investigation
Berlin,Germany -The New York Times, by JUDY DEMPSEY -May 12, 2009: -- German prosecutors have started a sweeping investigation into bribery accusations at MAN, the truck maker and one of biggest industrial companies in the country, over suspected efforts to increase sales illegally across Europe... Investigators raided 59 MAN sites and seven homes in searches that lasted about a week, the prosecutors’ office in Munich said on Tuesday. More than 100 people have been questioned and two were arrested, though one was later released, the office said. The suspects, including employees at MAN and potential customers, are being investigated over bribery and tax evasion allegations, the office said... Bribes were paid to employees and customers inside and outside Germany to procure sales of trucks and buses, according to the chief prosecutor in the case, Manfred Nötzel... Mr. Nötzel also said he suspected that in some cases bribes had been paid through shadow companies in Malta, the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, Cyprus, London and New York... * USA - Cummins well positioned for improved economy
Columbus,IND,USA -The Trucker News Services -13 May 2009: -- Despite the current global recession, Cummins Inc. is taking aggressive actions to ensure that its long-term profitable growth resumes once the economic recovery begins, Chairman and CEO, Tim Solso, told shareholders at the company’s annual meeting Tuesday... Speaking from the Columbus Engine Plant, Solso told shareholders that Cummins is preparing for little or no global economic growth through the end of 2010, but that the company expects to remain profitable and generate positive cash flow throughout the recession...
* Japan - Daimler to cut 2,300 jobs at Mitsubishi Fuso unit
Oye,Nagoya,Japan -Associated Press (Berlin,Germany)/The Trucker (USA), by Kevin Jones -13 May 2009: -- Daimler AG announced Wednesday a restructuring plan for its Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation that is expected to result in some 2,300 job cuts by the end of next year... Kawasaki, Japan-based Mitsubishi Fuso will close a bus production plant at Oye, near Nagoya by mid-2010 and shut a truck plant near the Thai capital, Bangkok, by the end of this year, Daimler said in a statement... It also will streamline its retail network in Japan, its most important market, to “adjust capacity to a declining market,” Stuttgart-based Daimler said...
