TRUCKER'S STORY * USA - Poor economy, layoff, sends new father back out on the road
Washington,MISS,USA -The Trucker, by Barb Kampbell -13 May 2009: -- He’s driven trucks a total of 18 years and while it is something he enjoys, he tried to get out of trucking when “his heart,” Kalep was born. He turned nine months old on April 13... "I took nine months off to be with my little boy,” John Olier said. “I had to go back to trucking after I got laid off from International Paper mill.”... Olier is safety directory for VCW Trucking in Washington, Miss. The company has five trucks. He usually drives for three weeks and then has one week at home where he leads safety meetings to make sure all of the drivers are compliant... Olier has some ideas about how to help the trucking industry and he offered advice to other drivers... “I would like for them to start dressing better,” he said, “and learn what showering means. I’d like to see them take better care of themselves. I had to give a driver CPR and he could have had a disease. He had a newborn baby and a 17-year-old son and a wife... “They need to be smarter than the objects they work with. Sometimes you just can’t fix stupid.”...
