TRAFFIC VOLUME TRENDS * USA: Report

* DC - Traffic moves further by noon than Space Station has ever flown

-- New information released by the Department of Transportation (DOT) shows that U.S. driving reached 746 billion miles in the first three months of 2016 — surpassing the previous record of 720.1 billion miles set last year... For a sense of scale, 746 billion miles is roughly 286.9 times as far as the International Space Station has traveled since it began orbiting in 1998. In fact, Americans drive twice as far on any given day before noon than the space station has ever flown... The new data, published in the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) latest Traffic Volume Trends report – a monthly estimate of U.S. road travel — show that more than 273.4 billion miles were driven in March 2016 alone, highlighting the growing demands facing the nation’s roads...

Traffic for the week ended Saturday fell to 233,587 trailers and containers... March intermodal traffic rose 0.5% to 933,208 units over the same month last year... Railroad volume is considered an important economic indicator. Intermodal traffic, which tends to be higher-value merchandise than bulk commodities, uses trains for the long haul and trucks for shorter distances at either end of the trip...

* North American spot market surges 8.4% year-over-year in August

Portland,ORE,USA -Truck News (CAN) -Sep 12, 2012: -- TransCore’s DAT North American Freight Index outpaced August 2011 volume by 8.4%, marking the sixth time in 2012 volume has exceeded prior year levels. Freight volume on the spot market, month-over-month, edged above July 2012 by 1.1%, following a typical seasonal pattern... The monthly DAT North American Freight Index reflects spot market freight availability on TransCore’s network of load boards in the US and Canada... Truckload freight rates on the spot market continued their expected seasonal decline in August from their June peak, however, rates across all equipment types were higher year-over-year. Rates for dry vans declined 5.0% compared to July, but were up 2.3% versus August 2011. Refrigerated van rates slid 4.7%, but increased 5.8% year-over-year. Flatbed rates dipped 1.1%, but rose 2.9% when compared to the same month last year... Rates are derived from the DAT Truckload Rate Index and do not include fuel surcharges. Spot market rates are paid by brokers and 3PLs to the carrier...

Container traffic for the week ended Saturday rose 5% to 188,647 units, while trailers fell 8.7% to 25,870 units... Railroad carloads — excluding intermodal — fell 2.3% to 272,301 units for the week, AAR said in its weekly report... Railroad volume is considered an important economic indicator. * Missouri - Cass freight indexes mixed in June

St. Louis,MISS,USA -TruckGauge -July 5, 2012: -- Freight volume across all modes in June was up 1.3% from May but down 1.3% from June 2011, according to the Cass Freight Shipments Index. Meanwhile, freight expenditures dipped 0.1% from May but were up 0.9% from June 2012... “The trend in North American freight volumes continues to follow the path of general malaise that the economy is experiencing,” Cass Information Systems said in its monthly report. “The economy has been flat for several months and is even beginning to trend downward in terms of new orders and manufacturing output. This slowdown on manufactured goods is putting downward pressure on freight” ... The Cass Freight Index measures trends in North American shipping activity based on $20 billion in paid freight expenses for more than 350 of America’s largest shippers...

Volume rose to 996,022 units, and June’s average weekly volume of 249,006 units was the third highest for any month on record, trailing only August and October of 2006, the rail trade group said... Intermodal activity for the week ended June 30 rose 7%, led by 9.2% jump in container traffic to 222,410 units, offsetting a 6.8% drop in trailer traffic to 31,087 units...

* DC - Unemployment Rate Holds at 8.2%, Trucking Gains 2,000 Jobs

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -6 July 2012: -- The U.S. unemployment rate held at 8.2% in June trucking improved by 2,000 jobs, the Labor Department said Friday... The transportation sector, of which trucking is a subset, added 25,300 jobs, according to the department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics... Employers added 69,000 jobs to non-farm payrolls, following a revised 77,000 in May that was revised upward. Private-sector employment rose by 84,000 jobs, the weakest in 10 months... Economists had forecast a 100,000 gain in non-farm jobs, Bloomberg reported... Manufacturing employment rose by 11,000, more than the 7,000 increase forecast. Construction employment rose by 2,000 jobs... The payroll and unemployment figures are obtained by separate surveys, with payrolls from a survey of employers and the unemployment rate from a survey of households...

Average spot rates on the Asia-Europe trade slipped slightly this week for the sixth week in a row, reflecting the growing amount of new capacity that is being deployed and of idled vessels that are returning to the trade... The World Container Index of spot prices in the trade from Shanghai to Rotterdam, which is compiled by Drewry and the Cleartrade Exchange in Singapore, dropped by $4 (-0.1 percent) this week to $3,225 per laden 40-foot container from $3,229 on June 7...

* Illinois / USA - Logistics Costs Rose 6.6 Percent Last Year

Lombard,ILL,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Joseph Bonney -Jun 13, 2012: -- Report said costs totaled $1.28 trillion last year, still below pre-recession high of $1.39 trillion in 2007... U.S. business logistics costs rose 6.6 percent last year as companies spent more on transportation and inventory in a gradually recovering economy, according to the 23rd annual State of Logistics report... The report, sponsored by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and Penske Logistics, said logistics costs totaled $1.28 trillion last year. That was up $79 billion from 2010 but still below the peak of $1.39 trillion in 2007... * Virginia - For-Hire Truck Tonnage Dipped 4 Percent in January

Cassidy -Feb 28, 2012: -- The freight tonnage carried by for-hire trucks fell 4 percent in January from December, when it surged 6.4 percent, the American Trucking Associations said... The ATA’s monthly, seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index still rose 3.6 percent year-over-year, underscoring trucking’s freight gain since the recession... ATA Chief Economist, Bob Costello, said the drop in tonnage probably reflected a larger than expected gain in December, rather than a real slowdown in freight... The ATA revised its for-hire tonnage increase for 2011 down a tenth of a percentage point to 5.8 percent, which matches trucking’s tonnage gain in 2010...

* DC - NAFTA Surface Trade Up 11.6 Percent in December

Surface transportation includes freight movements by truck, rail, pipeline, mail, and through foreign trade zones. In December, 85.5 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moved via land, 10 percent moved by vessel, and 4.5 percent moved by air... * DC - Truckload Rates Up 8.6 Percent. Holiday shipping pushed up rates in December, reversing decline in Cass index

Cassidy -Jan 10, 2012: -- Truckload linehaul rates rose 0.7 percent in December from the previous month and were up 8.6 percent year-over-year, according to Cass Information Systems... The Cass Truckload Linehaul Index rose to 109.2 last month, up from 108.4 in November, as truckload carriers wrapped up the holiday shipping season. Lean inventories that kept goods rolling deep into the holiday shopping season likely helped truckers reverse a two-month trend that saw rates fall slightly... Rates dropped half a percentage point from September through November, according to the index. Annualized increases peaked in August at 10.1 percent. Cass’s index, based on data drawn from more than $17 billion in freight invoices processed by the company annually, backs other measures of truck pricing...

The index is based on millions of gallons of diesel purchases using fuel cards from Comdata, a subsidiary of Ceridian... The report also said that the weak second half 2011 economy left the index 1.2% below the level at the end of June...

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics of the U.S. Department of Transportation has reported double-digit year-over-year gains every month of 2011 compared to 2010, and many months of successive year-over-year gains going back two or more years... Washington,DC,USA -Truck News (CAN) -Nov 4, 2011: -- Trade using surface transportation between Canada, the US, and Mexico was 18.3% higher in August than in August 2010, totalling $80.4 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the US Department of Transportation. This was the second time on record that US-NAFTA trade by land modes exceeded $80 billion in one month - the first time was in March... BTS reported that the value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico rose 48.2% in August since August 2009 and 11.3% since August 2008...

* Missouri - Freight Index Slides 9.9 Percent in October

St. Louis,MISS,USA -The Journal of Commerce -Nov 7, 2011: -- Cass domestic shipping decline follows September drop in international measures... The Cass Freight Index for U.S. domestic shipments took a steep 9.9 percent dive in October from the month before, cutting short a two-month rally in the closely watched measure... The first sequential decline since July also left the Cass Information Systems index at its lowest level since February... The Cass index for shipping expenditures also showed seasonal weakness, slipping 4 percent from September to October. The spending index was 16.1 percent above the same month a year ago, in part because energy prices have grown sharply over the past year...

* New Jersey - Survey Shows Truckload Capacity Down 1.5 Percent

Capacity at a group of six large truckload carriers tracked by The Journal of Commerce fell a cumulative 1.5 percent from the second quarter and 1.5 percent from a year ago, with two carriers increasing capacity slightly year-over-year... The tractor count at the more than $10 billion carrier group is 6.8 percent lower than it was at the end of 2008 and 14.7 percent lower than at the end of 2006. Since 2009, however, the combined tractor count has only declined slightly... At the end of 2006, the group had 47,540 tractors. It culled 1,212 tractors in 2007, and 2,822 in 2008, as the U.S. economy slid into a global recession. The carriers retired another 2,787 trucks in 2009, as the recession peaked...

* Maryland - LTL Rates Rising, But So Are Costs

Less-than-truckload pricing is rising, financial results from the largest LTL carriers show, buoyed by tightening capacity and increased freight volume despite uncertainty about the course the economy will take over the next few quarters... Shippers should brace for even higher LTL rates in the fourth quarter and 2012, said transportation analyst David Ross of Stifel Nicolaus in Baltimore. “Little price is translating into margin expansion, as costs are also rising quickly," he said in a written report... LTL carriers won contract rate increases in the mid-single digits in the third quarter, according to quarterly earnings reports and investment analysts. General rate increases on non-contract business as high as 6.9 percent saw little discounting...

* Minnessota - Ceridian-UCLA Trucking Index Rises 1.1 Percent

The Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index reversed course in October, rising 1.1 percent from September after declining for three consecutive months, indicating that trucking activity as measured by fuel purchases picked up in the early fall... Over the past three months, compared to the previous three months, the index declined at an annualized rate of 5.8 percent. “Until we get a series of positive months, it remains a she-loves-me, she-loves-me-not economy,” said Ed Leamer, chief economist for the index... The Ceridian-UCLA index rose 1.3 percent in October, compared to a 0.2 percent drop in September. The index is based on over-the-road purchases of diesel fuel through Ceridian’s electronic truck card network...

Surface transportation trade between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico was 11.8 percent higher in value in February than a year earlier, the Transportation Department reported... The value of cross-border trade with the United States’ partners in the North American Free Trade Agreement totaled $66.5 billion. Trade with Canada rose 10.1 percent to $40 billion. Shipments to and from Mexico rose 14.5 percent to $26.6 billion... The total value of cross-border trade was up 38.8 percent from $47.9 million in February 2009, which was the lowest level of any month since February 2004. Trade value in February 2011 was down 4.1 percent from the early recession level of February 2008, unadjusted for inflation...

A key measure of truckload capacity shot up 5.9 percent, or 9.1 points, indicating that truckload capacity tightened in the first week of April as freight demand increased... The Longbow Research Truckload Barometer rose to 164.2 from 155.1, reversing a 5.7 percent drop in the index in the month of March... Since January, the index has risen 49.4 percent. The index measures available freight against available equipment, climbing as capacity contracts... Year-over-year, the barometer is up 51.7 percent, Longbow said April 7... Strong produce demand in the Southeast and improvements in manufacturing and retailing are constricting the availability of tractor-trailers, Longbow said...

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Today's Trucking -21 March 2011: -- TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index set another record for spot market freight volume with a month over month increase of 11 percent, despite February is a short month... Load postings were up 36 percent year over year. February 2011 freight volume was more than double that of February 2009, during the economic downturn... February 2011 volumes also reached the highest levels for the month since TransCore began recording the Canadian freight data in 2001... This mirrors the findings on TransCore’s North American Freight Index that recorded the highest spot market truckload freight volume for the month of February since the company established the North American Freight Index in 1986... Washington,DC,USA -Today's Trucking (CAN) -18 March 2011: -- The value of North American surface trade was down, but the volume was way up in 2010, compared to 2009 levels, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation... Surface transportation trade between the U.S. and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners Canada and Mexico jumped a record 24.3 percent in 2010, the department said... The increase was the largest since the DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics began tracking the data in 1994 but the $791 billion value of NAFTA surface trade remained below pre-recession levels of 2007 and 2008... U.S.-Canada surface transportation trade totaled $471 billion in 2010, an increase of 22.1 percent. The value of imports carried by truck from Canada was 17.3 percent higher in 2010 than 2009 while the value of exports carried by truck rose 21.8 percent... Surface transportation trade between the U.S. and Mexico totaled $320.3 billion, up 27.6 percent. Truck imports rose 26.5 percent while exports rose 24.3 percent... In 2010, 86.2 percent of U.S. merchandise trade by value with Canada and Mexico moved on land. Total North American surface transportation trade value in 2010 increased by 13.4 percent compared to 2005, and was up by 37.5 percent compared to 2000, a period of 10 years...

* USA - NAFTA Trade Jumped Record 24.3 Percent in 2010

Surface transportation trade between the U.S. and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners Canada and Mexico jumped a record 24.3 percent in 2010, the Transportation Department said... The increase was the largest since the DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics began tracking the data in 1994 but the $791 billion value of NAFTA surface trade remained below pre-recession levels of 2007 and 2008... The DOT said the value of NAFTA imports moving by surface trade, principally truck, increased 25.1 percent last year while exports rose 23.3 percent...

TRUCKING STATISTICS * USA - US Freight Index Climbs 0.9 Percent in January

Second consecutive monthly gain, largest annual increase since 2002

Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Thomas L. Gallagher -Mar 9, 2011: -- Freight transportation movements in the U.S. increased for the second consecutive month in January, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics... DOT’s Freight Transportation Services Index rose 0.9 percent in January from a revised December level. The Freight TSI rose 6.4 percent in 2010 based on revised numbers, compared to the 0.4 percent annual increase reported in the February release. The 6.4 percent rise was the largest annual increase in the Freight TSI since 2002... The Freight TSI measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments in ton-miles, which are then combined into one index. The index measures the output of the for-hire freight transportation industry and consists of data from for-hire trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and air freight...

* USA - Index Shows Truckload Demand Rising. Capacity tightens in Southeast as produce shipping grows

Cassidy -Mar 10, 2011: -- A key measure of truckload demand jumped 18.9 percent week over week in early March, signaling tightening capacity as the nation and the economy warm up... Longbow Research's Truckload Barometer rose to 164.5 for the week ending March 11 from 138.4 the prior week, hitting its highest level since mid-2010... The research firm's barometer measures the amount of available freight relative to current levels of available equipment, climbing as capacity gets tighter... Year-over-year, the barometer is up 97.2 percent, and the index has risen 49.7 percent since the beginning of 2011, the investment research firm said Wednesday... The March spike in part stems from the start of the produce season in the Southeast, which consumes available truckload capacity, Longbow Research said... Longbow's Flatbed Barometer also climbed, rising 2.9 percent week-over-week in its eighth consecutive weekly increase to its highest level in two years...

Transport Market Monitor * The Netherlands - Transport prices up by 7.9 % in 2010

Nijmegen Area,Netherlands -Fleet Europe, by Claude Yvens -22 Feb 2011: -- According to the 6th edition of Transport Market Monitor, a transport price observatory produced by Capgemini Consulting and Transporeon; the platform handles a yearly transport volume of over €2 billion in all European countries; transport prices rose by 7.9% in 2010. They did not climb back to 2008 levels, however. The figures come from an analysis of transactions recorded on the Transporeon platform and are therefore more a reflection of spot transactions than long term contracts... Prices reached their highest levels in July 2010, indexed at 104.3 compared to the beginning of 2008. During the fourth quarter they would appear to have increased by 0.4%, when the capacity index fell slightly... According to the study’s authors, prices are set to fall during the first quarter of this year, before rising again during the following quarters, discounting seasonal effects: for the past three years, the index has fallen in January and February, risen in March and October, dropped in November and climbed back in December…

TRANSPORT STATISTICS * Europa - Freight Forwarding Index: road segment holding up

Copenhagen,Denmark -Truck Europe, by Michel Buckinx -2 Dec 2010: -- The European Freight Forwarding index published by Danske Bank shows a decrease for the month of December, down from 64 to 56. This drop is essentially due to the air and sea segments, with road holding up relatively well. Overall, the European freight market is set to end the year in negative mode. This demonstrates the uncertainty which currently reigns over the European market. The Euro crisis is believed to be behind this situation...

* UK - Transport prices stagnant according to Transport Market Monitor

London,UK -Truck Europe, by Michel Buckinx -26 Nov 2010: -- The 5th edition of the Transport Market Monitor from Transporeon and Capgemini Consulting indicates that transport prices, which had been following an upwards curve over the first six months of 2010, stagnated during the third quarter (up 0.8%). Transport prices are still at a level some 2% lower than they were in the third quarter of 2008. Amongst explanations for this is an increase in available transport capacity following a period of capacity reduction...

TRANSPORT STATISTICS * USA - DOT Freight Transportation Index Rises 3.2%

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -8 Dec 2010: -- The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 3.2% in October from a year earlier, the 10th straight year-over-year gain, DOT said Wednesday... The freight TSI notched a 0.2% gain from September to a reading of 98.9, DOT’s Bureau of Trade Statistics said in its monthly report... Despite the increase, the index it remains the lowest level for an October since 2001, when it was at 98.7... The TSI, which uses 2000 as a base-year reading of 100, is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit...
