* DC - Truckload Rates Up 8.6 Percent. Holiday shipping pushed up rates in December, reversing decline in Cass index

Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -Jan 10, 2012: -- Truckload linehaul rates rose 0.7 percent in December from the previous month and were up 8.6 percent year-over-year, according to Cass Information Systems...  The Cass Truckload Linehaul Index rose to 109.2 last month, up from 108.4 in November, as truckload carriers wrapped up the holiday shipping season. Lean inventories that kept goods rolling deep into the holiday shopping season likely helped truckers reverse a two-month trend that saw rates fall slightly...  Rates dropped half a percentage point from September through November, according to the index. Annualized increases peaked in August at 10.1 percent. Cass’s index, based on data drawn from more than $17 billion in freight invoices processed by the company annually, backs other measures of truck pricing...


* DC - DOT Freight Transport Index Rises 4.9%

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -11 Jan 2012: -- The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 4.9% in November from a year ago,...  The freight TSI edged up 0.1% from October... The 109.5 reading is the second-highest since July 2008, said DOT, which uses a baseline reading of 100 from the year 2000...  Freight shipments through the first 11 months of 2011 were 2.4% over 2010... 


* California - Ceridian-UCLA Trucking Index Slips 0.7% Year-Over-Year


Los Angeles,CAL,USA -Transport Topics -12 Jan 2012: -- The Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index, which measures diesel fuel card purchases at truck stops, slipped in December from a year ago but showed improvement from November... The index declined 0.7% year-over-year but rose 0.2% from November, payroll processor Ceridian said...  The index is based on millions of gallons of diesel purchases using fuel cards from Comdata, a subsidiary of Ceridian...  The report also said that the weak second half 2011 economy left the index 1.2% below the level at the end of June...


* DC - Intermodal Traffic Drops 9.3% for Week

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -13 Jan 2012: -- U.S. intermodal traffic fell 9.3% for the week ended Saturday from a year ago, the Association of American Railroads reported...  Container traffic declined 8.4% to 167,411 units, while trailer traffic dropped 14.3% to 26,401 units, AAR said in its weekly report...  Railroad carloads excluding intermodal decreased 3.7% to 274,862 units...  Railroad volume is considered an important economic indicator. Intermodal traffic, which tends to be higher-valued merchandise than bulk commodities, uses trains for the long haul and trucks for the shorter distance at either end of the trip...
