More than 83 percent of all transportation made by trucks * USA

Miami,FL,USA -Top Speed, by Simona -6 May 2013: -- In most of the countries, the trucking sector dominates the commercial transportation industry, and the U.S., of course, is no exception, as previous studies reveal that more that 83 percent of all transportation is made by trucks. They deliver everything from food to clothes and bicycles to motor vehicles... In the U.S. alone, there are a total of 3 million registered class-8 trucks (18 wheelers), meaning a total of 54 million individual truck tires are required by all of them. These trucks travel about 11,609 miles a second, meaning that each year the 3 million trucks go around the Earth about 14.7 million times. That’s a whole lot of hauling!.. On average, a class-8 truck needs 9.3 gallons of fuel per hour, while driving at speeds of 65 mph. By doing a little math you will see that the trucking industry requires 52,300 million gallons of fuel per year... While it requires lots of resources, the trucking industry is paying a total of $35 billion just in Federal, State and Highway use taxes alone. Needless to say, just these statistics show just how necessary the trucking industry is...


* Tennessee - Chances of a capacity shortfall increasing

Chattanooga,TN,USA -Fleet Owner -May 6, 2013: -- With tonnage growth subdued and rates flat, much of the TL segment seems to be in a “holding pattern” in terms of adding more capacity – a move that might create a trucking capacity crunch as early as this summer, noted Richard Mikes, managing partner of Transport Capital Partners (TCP), during a webinar hosted by Wall Street investment firm Stifel Nicolaus... However, such a crunch could be offset by conflicting trends in the private fleet segment, as half of the private fleets polled by CK Commercial Vehicle Research (CKCVR) in its quarterly “fleet sentiment” report indicate they are adding capacity via purchases over the next three months – with an average of more than 40% of their new power unit orders designated as “new capacity” ...

At the OTA Spring Board Retreat in Muskoka from May 30 to May 31, they’ve created a forum for industry up-and-comers with the Next Generation program to share ideas, opinions and experiences... Embracing new opportunities and ideas is key to any organization. Jeff Bryan, OTA chair and president of Jeff Bryan Transport, thinks the NextGen program will allow for greater collaboration between all members of the OTA... 
* Ohio - Private fleets adding capacity faster than for-hire fleets: survey 

Columbus,OH,USA -Truck News (CAN) -6 May 2013: -- Private fleets are currently adding capacity with additional units at a faster rate than for-hire fleets, according to results from CK Commercial Vehicle Research’s second-quarter Fleet Sentiment survey... * DC - FMCSA orders four ‘reincarnated’ carriers to cease operating 

Washington,DC,USA -Fleet Owner, by Deborah Whistler -May 6, 2013: -- The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has ordered four Olathe, KS-based trucking companies – Royal Transport, Inc.; Nationwide, Inc.; Freight, Inc.; and Midwest A, Inc. – to immediately cease all interstate transportation service based on evidence that they are reincarnated “chameleons” for an unsafe truck company previously shut down by the agency... Earlier this year, FMCSA investigators discovered that the four companies were functioning under common operation and control in order to avoid a negative compliance history... The agency also determined that Freight, Inc. and Midwest A. Inc, were created to avoid the out-of-service order issued against Nationwide, Inc., on July 16, 2008, for failure to pay civil penalties. During its investigation, FMCSA discovered the carriers were operating the same vehicles, using the same drivers and maintaining the same operational and management structure as Royal, Inc...

* UK - Attracting and retaining talent remains key concern for logistics bosses


London,EN,UK -Commercial Motor (UK), by Chris Druce -13 February 2012: -- Almost three-quarters (72%) of transport and logistics bosses plan to overhaul how they manage the talent within their companies in response to the skills crisis... Sector analysis of PricewaterhouseCooper’s (PwC) 15th Annual Global CEO Survey reveals that attracting and keeping hold of talent is a significant concern for most bosses within road transport... Approaching half (45%) of the 98 transport bosses surveyed label the struggle to attract new workers as a “major threat” to the long term viability of their businesses, while a quarter concede that young workers are the most difficult to hire and keep...  The results mirror last year's, which found attracting and retaining talent to be the number one concern...  PwC’s global transport and logistics leader, Klaus-Dieter Ruske, says: “Transportation and logistics companies need to improve their brand as an employer, introduce cutting-edge recruiting practices and offer attractive career and development opportunities to the younger workforce” ...

Survey * USA - Half of Companies Do Not Enforce Employee Cell Phone Policies

32% of companies report on-the-job crashes due to cell phone related distractions

Reston,VA,USA –Zoom Safer -May 18, 2011: -- ZoomSafer today released a survey showing that 32% of companies have knowledge or evidence of on-the-job crashes that have occurred as a result of distractions stemming from employee use of cell phones while driving. The first annual survey polled 500 business managers in North America and was designed to gauge corporate attitudes and best practices pertaining to distracted driving... Overall findings indicate rapidly growing concern among corporate managers about distracted driving risks and liability. Results show that 62% of companies have adopted written policies prohibiting employees from using a mobile phone while driving for company business. The survey also reveals that while many companies have adopted written cell phone driving policies, only half (53%) make any attempt to enforce compliance. Among companies that do enforce compliance, the survey found that 61% rely on post-incident disciplinary measures, and only 2% currently utilize technology to proactively measure and manage employee compliance with cell phone use policies...  (Photo from farm4.static.flickr)

SURVEY * USA - Capacity expansion lagging behind freight demand: TCP

Carriers may be ready to replace their aging fleets, but their appetites for fleet expansion shrunk compared to earlier in the year

Nashville,IND,USA –Today's Trucking -8 Dec 2010:   ... That's the word from Transport Capital Partners, which recently completed its Business Expectation Survey for the fourth quarter of 2010... This quarter, 40 percent of carriers said they would acquire (or replace) more than 10 percent of their fleet this quarter compared to 30 percent of carriers in the last survey... However, they're not as keen on adding capacity right now. Fewer are planning capacity increases than a quarter ago, with 41 percent saying they have no plans to add capacity up from 34 percent last quarter, while a quarter of the carriers plan to add only 1 to 5 percent... Those that do indicate they'll expand their fleet size, tend to do it with owner-operators... Meanwhile, 13 percent of the under $25 million revenue carriers expect credit to tighten over the next twelve months compared to only 4 percent of those with revenues above that level...

Trucking Optimism * UK - Trucking Britain Out Of Recession survey

Two-thirds of respondents said none of their vehicles are parked up, while 91% said that either all or most of their fleet's capacity is being used

Back in the real world, fleet utilisation remains high: two-thirds of respondents said none of their vehicles are parked up, while 91% said that either all or most of their fleet's capacity is being used... This reflects the very high level of optimism at the moment. After taking a knock in July, optimism about prospects for the next 12 months bounced back strongly in August to a near-record high... Those who said they were either very or fairly optimistic about the next 12 months accounted 77% of responses, while those that were not very or not at all optimistic accounted for 22% - giving an optimism index score of +55, which matches June's score and is just three points shy of January's all-time high of +58... Reinforcing the optimism index score is the number of respondents whose businesses have already started to recover from the recession: 49%, which is a new record. A further 25% expect their business to recover from recession within the next 12 months...

* Impose harsher penalties on rogue operators: 79%
* Abandon the fuel duty escalator: 61%
* Educate customers as to why they should pay more for transport: 56%
* Revise pre-pack administration rules to ensure no more legal phoenixes: 48%
* Agree a standard of service for all maintenance providers to meet: 46%
* Abandon Driver CPC: 39%
* Abandon the introduction of Euro-6 engine emissions legislation: 38%
* Allow some form of longer and/or heavier vehicles on UK roads: 28%
* Introduce a road-user charge: 25%
* Impose greater restrictions on entry to the industry: 24%
* Make Driver CPC more robust and more flexible: 22%
* Put more VOSA officers at the roadside: 21%

Survey * USA - Fleets not yet ready for plug-in electric vehicles

Northbrook,ILL,USA -Fleet Owner, by Sean Kilcarr -Jul 12, 2010: -- Nearly 65% of 100 private and government fleets in a recent nationwide poll say they are “not likely” to purchase either a plug-in hybrid or all-electric vehicle, primarily due to a lack of data regarding operating cost, emission reductions, vehicle specifications, pricing, resale values, and fuel efficiency... Chelsea Mathis, an environmental consultant told FleetOwner that many of the fleets participating in Donlen’s survey expressed particular concern regarding the battery charging process... Roughly 35% of fleets responding to Donlen’s survey viewed saw a plug-in electric vehicle as a good fit for sales application drivers, with 25% targeting service drivers. More than 25% of respondents would target the Midwest region as the starting point for the use of plug-in electric vehicles, while the majority would consider multiple regions... More than 46% of respondents would charge their electric vehicles at an office location with 33% charging their vehicles at home, according to the survey... SURVEY * Australia - Union blames truck speeding on customers

The Transport Workers Union claiming, financial pressure is forcing truck drivers to break speed limits

Sydney,NSW,Australia -The Sydney Morning Herald/ATN -July 12, 2010: ... A Roads and Traffic Authority survey published today claims 37.7 percent of heavy vehicles exceeded 100km/h limits in NSW last year, an increase of more than nine percent from 2008... The NSW Injury Risk Management Research Centre told the paper crash rates are up by 25 percent due in most part to incentives and pressure to drive faster... He says drivers have no control over pay conditions and are forced to make ends meet by unsafe practices... TWU National Secretary Tony Sheldon, has repeated his call for the establishment of a federal tribunal to ensure drivers and companies are paid enough to get the job done safely... A policy paper is due to be released soon by the Federal Government outlining how it plans to reform the pay system in the trucking industry...The government paper is in response to the findings of a 2008 report that found a demonstrable link between low rates of pay and poor safety in the heavy vehicle industry...

SURVEY * USA - Truckload Carriers Using Brokers Less

Truckers shift capacity away from third parties as freight demand rises

Nashville,TN,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -Jun 23, 2010: -- Truckload carriers are becoming less reliant on brokers as freight volume recovers from the recession, according to a survey by Transport Capital Partners... Almost 80 percent of the trucking companies surveyed by Transport Capital Partners in the last quarter said they used brokers less in the period... In May 2009, two thirds of the carriers surveyed said they were using more brokers, he said. In May 2010, three quarters of the carriers were using fewer brokers... It's a sign of strengthening freight volume that carriers are less and less reliant on brokers to find loads and are charging brokers more for access to capacity... Smaller carriers rely on brokers more than larger carriers do, according to TCP, but both groups rely on brokers less than they did a year ago... A strong surge in demand is leading to truck shortages in certain markets for brokers, as carriers shift capacity to longer term or higher paying customers... HOS * USA - Truck collisions down 11.7%, most wrecks in first 8 driving hours

Arlington,VA,USA -The Trucker, by BARB KAMPBELL -19 May 2010: -- An Hours of Service safety impact analysis was released today which used an online formatted survey for carriers to answer questions regarding safety performance data for 2009 which was then compared to data from 2004... The survey was in response to the upcoming Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Hours-of-Service (HOS) rulemaking process. The American Trucking Associations (ATA) commissioned the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) to examine HOS safety impacts on the trucking industry. ATRI previously studied this relationship using 2003 and 2004 motor carrier and government data... The majority of commercial vehicle collisions (87 percent) occurred within the first eight hours of driving. A similar trend was found in an analysis of fatal truck collisions using the Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents (TIFA) database. Survey * USA - Third of drivers not satisfied with fleet benefits

Thirty-five percent of drivers rate their current fleet benefits as "below average"

Overland Park,KN,USA -Today's Trucking (CAN) -10 May 2010: ... Meanwhile, only 10 percent rate their fleet benefits as "above average," with the remaining 55 percent rating benefits as "average," according to a survey published by Open Road Drivers Plan, a legal services and credit provider for over-the-road truckers across North America... The survey measured truckers' attitudes toward carrier compensation and incentives, equipment and technology, employee-company communications, and job stability... The survey shows that the industry's low turnover rates over the last few years are not the result of increased job satisfaction... Two out of three drivers place high value on a company's driver recognition and safety incentive programs when deciding whether to leave or stay... Communication is also key to drivers, with 100 percent of drivers surveyed saying that their relationship with company dispatchers was important to their longevity with a company...

SURVEY * UK - Joe Public does know the value of haulage

London,UK -The Road Transport, by Justin Stanton -16 April 2010: -- The general public do realise the value of the transport industry, new research has revealed, with 84% considering it to be important in their everyday lives... When asked by the FTA what the most important benefits of transport are, 84% identified the transport of medical supplies and hospital equipment as highly important, while the transport of food and drink was next (80%)... The research was carried out to help inform the direction of the FTA's Love Logistics campaign, which aims to improve the industry's image with MPs and public alike... The study also reveals that the public believe congestion is caused by trucks and vans, but crucially they are receptive to night-time deliveries... Some respondents suggested using more night-time deliveries in town centres to ease congestion during the rush hour. Indeed, when asked, 75% agreed that it is important to increase night-time deliveries despite a degree of increased noise...

SURVEY * USA - “Re-set” for transportation industry under way

Eden Prairie,MINN,USA -Fleet Owner, by Sean Kilcarr -Apr 6, 2010: -- The U.S. freight transportation industry as a whole – and the trucking sector in particular – is undergoing a massive “re-set” of sorts in reaction to the global economic recession, unpredictable fuel costs, and shipment volumes below what are considered nominal levels for growth... GE Capital’s transportation finance division survey of 539 mid-market companies in seven distinct industries across the U.S., found that many transportation companies are completely re-evaluating how they do business... Other trends GE Capital sees include: fleets shrinking their size; overall length of hauls decreasing; and trade cycles being extended... In particular, the ongoing reduction in fleet size may be permanent – meaning the trucking industry is re-setting itself to a much smaller size...

USA -Truth About Trucking/Ask the Trucker, by Allen Smith -2 Feb 2010: -- On November 9th, 2009 we began our Owner Operator Lease Purchase Program survey, in order to collect data on this issue which has caused many drivers to fail within the trucking industry. I have always proposed that this program is one that is designed for the truck driver to fail, having noted that past studies have shown that this lease purchase option resulted in an 87% failure rate for drivers... SURVEY * USA - State DOTs favoring social media for alerts

Washington,DC,USA -Fleet Owner -Feb 26, 2010: -- A new survey by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' (AASHTO) of 32 state Departments of Transportation (DOT) agencies found that 26 states (81%) are now using Twitter to communicate with travelers when major traffic incidents or severe weather such as snow storms, hurricanes and tornadoes force road closures or detours... Further, almost half of all the states surveyed (14) have an active Facebook page, with 23 state DOTs using video on their website, while 18 states having an active YouTube channel. Since the survey was completed, at least three other states have also begun to use Twitter, AASHTO said... Overall, state DOTs are finding that social media are decidedly more efficient in reaching the public with time-sensitive traffic and travel information, according AASHTO’s survey. Among the various new social media tools, respondents found Twitter (65%), RSS feeds (56%), podcasts (18%) and Facebook (13%) to be the most effective method to reach their primary audiences...

SURVEY * USA - Just buying a new truck will get you some green cred?

Need a go-slow approach to get your company on the green road to sustainability? Just bide your time and start investing in new trucks — any new model that comes off the assembly line

Chesapeake Bay,MAR,USA -Greener Working, by Tom Guay -December 11, 2009: ... New trucks will be much greener than those your company operates today, according to a global survey of fleet operations from IBM, the Global Truck 2020 Study, Transcending Turbulence... Truck makers are increasingly investing in fancy new hybrid technologies to make their vehicles more fuel efficient, run on alternative fuels and incorporate new technologies to make vehicles run cleaner. Trucking execs told IBM that the top drivers of change are:

* Technology — 71% of those surveyed by IBM said technology will be the most important external factor forcing change, such as remote diagnostic services to troubleshoot maintenance problems while trucks are in operation

* Globalization — 54% predicted more investment in product standardization and supply chain management to squeeze out greenhouse gas emissions from suppliers’ products and services, and

* Sustainability — 48% predicted environmental and fuel efficiency standards will be the main drivers.

But buying new trucks isn’t the only way to improve your fleet’s environmental performance. Training employees on green driving techniques is a low-cost, quick way to save money...

Survey * Canada - Suggests many canadians would like to ban hands-free cells as well


Toronto,ONT,CAN -Truck News -11 Nov 2009: -- Many Canadians feel cell phone bans for drivers should be extended to include hands-free devices, according to a recent survey by research group TNS Canadian Facts... Fifty-eight per cent of respondents aged 50 and older felt there should be a total ban on cell phone use while driving while only 27% of respondents between the ages of 18 and 24 felt that way... Forty-two per cent of respondents said they already own a hands-free option and 17% plan to purchase one while 39% said they will not acquire a hands-free phone or accessory... * USA - Finds US fleets ready to buy tractors, but not trailers

Columbus,OH,USA -Truck News -6 Nov 2009: -- Despite encouraging preliminary Class 8 net order figures in October, fleet managers aren’t opening their wallets just yet, according to the latest FSR Equipment Buying Index produced by CK Commercial Vehicle Research... The company’s fourth quarter survey, which measures US fleet buying intentions, fell 23% from the previous quarter to a reading of 68.7. The main source of the decline was that very few fleets planned to purchase new trailers... Only 21% of responding fleets said they’ll be purchasing new trailers in the fourth quarter while 46% planned on adding power units... * Canada - New survey explores transportation and logistics world in 2030

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Truck News -6 Nov 2009: -- Self-guided transport vehicles and the reverse of globalization by 2030? Those were some of the possibilities considered by transportation and logistics executives in a recent global survey... That was the question PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) posed to transportation company executives during a recent global survey, Transportation and Logistics 2030... More than half of respondents said they’re confident alternative energy will account for up to 80% of their overall energy mix by 2030. Nearly 70% of respondents predicted that by 2030, all emissions will be tracked along the entire supply chain and factored into the price of a product... Respondents felt oil prices will be kept in check thanks to the development of alternative energy sources coupled with the fact competition from new energy sources will force OPEC to increase oil production, keeping oil prices from ballooning to $1,000 per barrel... Respondents also agreed that more flexible and efficient usage of transport modes will emerge, including the use of autonomous and self-controlled systems and auto-guided vehicles that will revolutionize freight transportation... Survey * USA - Says Port Trucks Causing Pollution, Sickness

Seattle,WASH,USA -KIROTV -October 7, 2009: -- A survey of residents in two neighborhoods show some Seattleites believe the trucks going in and out of the Port of Seattle are making them sick... The low income advocacy group Port Sound Sage said 63 percent of residents surveyed in Georgetown and South Park believe emissions from the trucks are making them sick... SURVEY * UK - 20pc of fleet managers unaware of Euro 5

The changes to have immediate negative cost implications

London,UK -Logistics Manager -5 October 2009: -- One in five fleet managers and owner operators is unaware of the Euro 5 legislative changes that came into effect on 1st October, according to lubricant provider Castrol... The changes require HGV operators across Europe to improve the carbon efficiency of their vehicles and reduce emissions... Of the fleet managers and owner operators surveyed 44 per cent thought that the changes would have a direct impact on their business, with 39 per cent of those expecting the changes to have immediate negative cost implications...
