DRIVER SHORTAGE * South Africa too - TRUCKERS' PAYMENT

* Johannesburg - This is how much money truck drivers get paid in 
--- The Department of Labour has announced new minimum wages for South Africans who drive as a service – which will rise 7.1% with effect from 1 September 2016... According to the department, for those who work as drivers, the maximum permissible number of hours per week is 45. Broken down into a working week of five days, that represents a maximum of nine hours per day... Workers can work overtime and agree to work six day weeks, depending on the agreement they have with their employer... For long-haul truck drivers, working more than 70 hours per week is not uncommon which has led to complaints within the industry of driver fatigue, which leads to accidents... Research conducted by the Interdisciplinary Accident Research Centre in South Africa, revealed that driver fatigue is one of the main causes of truck crashes, with 41% of accidents being fatigue related... The most recent statistics show that there are more than 320,000 registered trucks – heavy load vehicles GVM & 3500kg in South Africa. 

 Drivers are paid in accordance to what part of South Africa they are based: 
# Area 1: Areas around Gauteng, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, and Cape Town 
# Area 2: Areas around Bloemfontein, East London, Kimberley, Klerksdorp, Pietermaritzburg, Somerset West, Stellenbosch and the Strand 
# Area 3: All other areas 

 The monthly revised pay is as follows:

  ... The good news is that South Africa has a shortage of skilled drivers, according to Barloworld Transport CEO Neil Henderson... He told BusinessDay towards the end of 2015 that the country needs approximately 15,000 new professional truck drivers every year, but is not able to recruit that many... Poor wages, and long hours are often cited as the reason to avoid taking up the job of a long-haul driver...

SURVEY * Australia - Union blames truck speeding on customers

The Transport Workers Union claiming, financial pressure is forcing truck drivers to break speed limits

Sydney,NSW,Australia -The Sydney Morning Herald/ATN -July 12, 2010: ... A Roads and Traffic Authority survey published today claims 37.7 percent of heavy vehicles exceeded 100km/h limits in NSW last year, an increase of more than nine percent from 2008... The NSW Injury Risk Management Research Centre told the paper crash rates are up by 25 percent due in most part to incentives and pressure to drive faster... He says drivers have no control over pay conditions and are forced to make ends meet by unsafe practices... TWU National Secretary Tony Sheldon, has repeated his call for the establishment of a federal tribunal to ensure drivers and companies are paid enough to get the job done safely... A policy paper is due to be released soon by the Federal Government outlining how it plans to reform the pay system in the trucking industry...The government paper is in response to the findings of a 2008 report that found a demonstrable link between low rates of pay and poor safety in the heavy vehicle industry...

PAY SYSTEM * Canada - Residents don’t understand, says trucker

Prince George,British Columbia,Canada -The Prince George Citizen, by GORDON HOEKSTRA -15 February 2008: -- ... But the log trucker says residents don't understand the system... The system the driver is talking about is the pay system for truck drivers. It's normally based on a rate of pay that is tied to a turnaround time. If a log trucker is being paid for a five-hour turnaround time, and it takes him six hours, he's not compensated for the last hour... There's an tendency for truckers to go faster when the conditions are good, but that can reduce turnaround times, which makes them even more difficult to meet when conditions are poor as they are now, said Prince George Truckers Association president Stan Wheeldon ... He said there has to be a change in mindset on the turnaround time issue and truckers' argument it makes it necessary to speed...
