Driving Under the Influence * USA

* Pennsylvania - DUIs in personal vehicle lead to trucker losing CDL for life

(Photo from Wikipedia: A woman using a driving simulator that recreates the experience of driving under the influence of alcohol. She is wearing glasses that distort her vision)
Monroe County,PENN,USA -Land Line, by Jami Jones -15 Feb 2013: -- Getting busted for DUI in his personal vehicle, twice, means a Pennsylvania man will be looking for a new job... The Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania ruled Feb. 7 in the case of James Sondergaard v. the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Transportation and Bureau of Driver Licensing, that Sondergaard’s CDL would be suspended for life... According to court records, Sondergaard was convicted twice of DUI in 2010. Both arrests occurred while Sondergaard, a CDL holder, was driving his personal vehicle. The Pennsylvania Driver Licensing Bureau then suspended his CDL for life in August 2011...   Federal regulation states that the first conviction of being under the influence – even in a non-CMV – results in a one-year suspension. The second conviction is a lifetime suspension... However, lifetime may not necessarily be lifetime. Reinstatement is possible after 10 years if that person has voluntarily entered and successfully completed an appropriate rehabilitation program approved by the state, according to Federal regulations...

In-Car Alcohol Detection System * USA - Congress Considers Funding for

Government-auto industry program that is trying to develop a device to detect drunken drivers

New York,NY,USA -The New York Times, by CHRISTOPHER JENSEN -June 25, 2010: -- A government-auto industry program that is trying to develop a device to detect drunken drivers, which would be installed in all new vehicles, is on track to get a six-fold increase in funding... The device, which would automatically sniff the driver’s breath or use a light beam to test the alcohol content of tissue, would prevent drunken operators from starting the vehicle. There is no plan for the device to be mandatory. Those working on the project hope consumers will accept the alcohol interlock voluntarily because of the safety advantages... The program has been operating on $2 million a year, but that would increase to $12 million a year after it was added to the new Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2010, which is awaiting consideration by the Senate... In 2008, almost 12,000 people died in “alcohol-impaired” crashes, according to federal records. Those who favor the devices say when they are in all vehicles they could save 8,000 to 9,000 lives a year by stopping drunks before they get on the road... A major question for the project is whether the public would voluntarily accept – and possibly pay extra for – such a system... (Photo from passaicnews: The end for a drunk driver)

* USA - The time is at hand!

We can eliminate drunk driving – we will eliminate drunk driving – with your help

Irving,TX,USA -MADD National (PR), by Laura Dean-Mooney -MADD President- 11 April 2010: -- On Tuesday, the 14th, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will be hearing testimony on lifesaving ignition interlock legislation ... The legislation would strongly encourage states to require ignition interlocks for all drunk driving offenders by taking away some of their highway funding if they don’t comply. New Mexico and Arizona were the first two states to pass this legislation and, since then, both have had drunk driving deaths drop by 30%... If we could pass this legislation nationwide, we could save literally thousands of lives each year. Unfortunately, we’ve been battling the alcohol industry and drunk driving defense attorneys tooth and nail to make this simple change, so it’s really important that we get the support of the committee... Please let your legislators know you want this vital legislation today. I can’t tell you how much it would mean to me and to the fight against drunk driving if every Senator I talk to Tuesday has already heard the voice of people like you, demanding this change... If you doubt why this is so important, take a look at this video. It’s the story of six families destroyed by the impact of one person’s tragic decision to drink and drive... Please email your senators today!

Washington,DC,USA -Today's Trucking (CAN) -13 Oct 2009: -- The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is asking carrier associations to keep in mind that mandatory observation of return-to-duty and follow-up drug testing is now in effect... Observed collections are required, rather than optional, for all return-to-duty and follow-up drug testing. Drunken Drivers * USA - Alaska law now requires to install Interlock devices

Gov. Sarah Palin has signed into law a bill that is intended to get tough with drivers who get behind the wheel after drinking too much...

Alaska,USA -Land Line Magazine -14 July 2008: -- The new law, requires first- and second-time DUI offenders, and some third-time offenders, to install ignition interlock devices on their vehicles. The rule affecting misdemeanor offenders takes effect Jan. 1, 2009... Interlocks are hooked up to the ignitions of vehicles. Once such a device is installed, a driver must blow into a mouthpiece, which measures the amount of alcohol on a person’s breath. If the driver blows clean, the car will then start; if not, it won’t budge... In addition, the devices often require drivers to re-blow in the machine after a designated period of time, to ensure that they have not convinced someone else to blow into the mouthpiece for them, or that they haven’t been drinking since getting behind the wheel...
