Drink Driving * Europe - ETSC publishes new report on commercial transport

Brussels,Belgium -HGV Ireland -March 24, 2010: -- The European Transport Safety Council has published a new report on drink driving in commercial transport... The paper illustrates how alcohol is affecting driving skills and its effect on crash rates. Moreover, against the background of their alcohol policies, it shows how successful a number of countries are in tackling drink driving... This ETSC policy paper gives an overview of how drink driving could be effectively tackled in commercial transport through various regulations and initiatives... It appears that there is no one-fits-all solution to takle drink-driving in commercial transport and that current technologies such as alcohol interlocks do not represent an end in themselves to solve the problem... The role of private stakeholders is crucial in guaranteeing high levels of safe driving culture and assuring sober driving in all circumstances... * UK - CILT supports lower drink drive limit for HGV drivers

Corby,Northants,UK -HGV Ireland -March 25, 2010: -- The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) has reiterated it’s support for the proposed reduction in the drink driving limit for commercial drivers to 20mg/mls following publication of a new report from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) that recommended a series of measures to be applied to professional drivers... CILT President, Paul Mallee, said that while commercial drivers were statistically less likely to drink drive than ordinary motorists, it was important that an effective zero tolerance approach was adopted given the size and scale of their goods and vehicles...
