DRIVERS' SHORTAGE * USA: Attracting truckers

* Georgia - One shipper at a time

--  There is no easy or single solution to what many believe is a worsening truck driver shortage in the U.S.A., but that’s not stopping motor carriers and their customers from escalating their response... Trucking industry executives speaking on an April 22 panel at the 10th annual Chainalytics Freight Market Intelligence Summit in Atlanta cited a lengthy list of demographic realities working against their best efforts to hire and keep drivers, including an aging driver population and continuing underrepresentation by women among drivers... And they were forceful in stating that trucking companies can’t solve the issue on their own. They not only need shippers’ help, but it’s also in shippers’ best interest to play a role in making truck driving a more acceptable profession. With trucking companies keeping scorecards of customers, drivers knowing which customers’ facilities are the most driver-friendly, and drivers in certain cases having a choice of which customers’ freight to haul, the onus is turning to the shipper to get involved... Shippers are beginning to catch on to the need to make their facilities driver-friendly, but for many, it’s still a new concept...
