Incentive pay being used more in trucking compensation executive says

San Diego,CAL,USA -The Trucker, by LYNDON FINNEY -5 Oct 2014: -- Incentive pay is being used more and more frequently in driver compensation programs, the top executive of a compensation consulting firm said here Sunday. “Pay for performance programs are very hot topics in trucking these days,” Beth B. Carroll, principal of the Prosperio Group told reporters at a news conference at the American Trucking Association Management Conference and Exhibition. Traditionally, she said, over-the-road drivers have been paid either using a base mile rate or a percentage of the shipment’s revenue... “But these approaches shift much of the risk to the driver and given tight margins this approach has made economic sense, but it has made it difficult to attract and retain drivers, said. That being the current norm, today companies are addressing the challenges of attracting and retaining drivers from one of two angles: raising base rates and using minimum pay guarantees, hourly pay or other “outside the industry” approaches, she noted... But there are other issues to consider in a compensation package... “Benefits, home time, pride, respect, a sense of accomplishment, a sense of being valued and respected by your employer, and a sense of doing a good day’s work for a good day’s pay are all important,” Carroll said. “All of these things matter, far more than most employers realize” ...
