* California - Agency wants to do more to recognize drivers

San Diego,CAL,USA -The Trucker, by LYNDON FINNEY -5 Oct 2014: -- The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration wants to do more to recognize America’s professional truck drivers, an agency official told the American Trucking Associations’ Safety Policy Committee here Sunday morning... “Drivers are the backbone of the country’s economic opportunity,” FMCSA Chief Safety Officer, Jack Van Steenberg, told the panel at a meeting held in conjunction with ATA Management Conference and Exhibition. “We have a team in place working with the ATA to recognize drivers in all modes for what they do every day and display those at our headquarters in Washington” ... The agency has come under fire from the ATA and other trucking industry stakeholders in recent months for creating an exhibit of photos of persons killed in big truck accidents, but not photos of safe drivers...
