* Europe - TRUCKING INDUSTRY: "Growth and transport demand cannot be decoupled,”

* Switzerland - Haulier boss: Growth and road transport ‘cannot be decoupled’

Geneva,Switzerland -EurActiv -18 September 2013: -- The new head of the has mounted a philosophical case that economic growth and transport demand are two sides of the same coin... The IRU argues that road transport is “the backbone of the real economy” in Europe and that the industry should thus be promoted and facilitated to provide better rather than more transport... The economic crisis slowed demand for road freight transport services, they say, in a demonstration of “the strong correlation between economic and transport growth ” ... In a hat tip to other successful industry campaigns against climate legislation, Umberto de Pretto, the secretary-general of the International Road Transport Union, attacked the ‘polluter pays’ principle underpinning EU policy as “limited and simplistic”... “The recent economic crisis has definitively showed us that economic growth and transport demand cannot be decoupled,” he told EurActiv in an interview... 


* Belgium - Mega-trucks proposal runs into political roadblock

(Photo:'Mega-trucks' are vehicles that can be up to 25-metres long, and weigh 60 tonnes. They can carry larger volumes and the road industry say using them requires fewer trips. But the vehicles have been sharply criticised by the rail industry and environmentalists, for pushing up road-transport demand unsustainably. Some member states, particularly in Scandinavia where rail networks are less advanced, see them as a potential solution to Europe') 
Brussels,Belgium -EuraActiv -16 September 2013: -- A controversial proposal to end cross-border restrictions and length-restrictions for mega-trucks across the EU is looking increasing unlikely to see the light of day in the current European Commission... On 17 September, the European Parliament’s transport committee will debate issues including new aerodynamic aspects of the proposal, which unite environmentalists and the road transport lobby... But it increasingly appears to be an academic exercise, according to the International Road Transport Union (IRU), even though the parliamentary rapporteur, Jörg Leichtfried (Socialist and Democrats, Austria), still expects his report to be adopted at the last plenary of the year in April 2014, a month before the European elections... 


* UK - Volume upturn leads to fleet expansion

Saint-Vallier,Drôme,France -HGV UK -September 17, 2013: -- BRS Ltd., one of the UK’s leading suppliers of commercial vehicle contract hire solutions, has provided 13 new Renault trucks to leading logistics service provider, Norbert Dentressangle. Following impressive fuel returns of over 13mpg on a Renault Midlum demonstrator vehicle, the five Renault Premium 270.18 4×2 rigids, five Renault Midlum 270.18 and three Renault Midlum 180.08, all with Optitronic automated gearboxes, have been supplied through BRS on a full five year repair and maintenance contract... The new trucks have been acquired for Norbert Dentressangle’s contract with leading electrical and electronic equipment manufacturer, Mitsubishi Electric. They have all been delivered in Mitsubishi Electric’s new livery and will undertake nationwide, multi-drop, next day distribution... The company has an additional 40 Renault Midlums on order, through BRS, for delivery later in the year...
