* Illinois - Analysis: Are trucker profits signaling a market U-turn?

Chicago,ILL,USA -Zacks, by Nick Kalivas -July 15, 2013: -- Friday’s profit warning from UPS and today’s earnings short fall from JB Hunt put the transport sector in the spotlight. The results may cause a review of the profit outlook in the freight/transportation sector, and the market to think about making a U-turn... UPS noted its profits had been hurt by customers trading down to lower cost shipment methods, slower industrial production, and overcapacity in the airfreight market... The slowdown in international business is not surprising given soft export growth numbers from China and India, and continued sluggish economic growth in Europe... JB Hunt reported that its truck segment saw a 20% drop in revenues due to a smaller fleet and lower utilization... The profit results prompt an examination of the Cass Shipping index, which monitors freight shipment volume, for insight into the transportation industry’s health...

* Wiscosin - Roadrunner Keeps on Trucking

(Photo)
Cudahy,WIS,USA -MoneyShow, by Tom Bishop -16 July 2013: -- Roadrunner Transportation Systems is a trucking company that does not own its own trucks. Instead it utilizes 3,300 independent contractors, triple the number four years ago... ICs are individuals or small teams that own or lease their own trucks and provide dedicated capacity to Roadrunner. And they are an industry leader in driver retention, important in a tight market where the average driver is 56... In addition, when it is not economic to use its own ICs (Roadrunner is very clever in that regard), it utilizes any of 9,000+ third-party trucking companies from JB Hunt on down... Because they don’t own their trucks (though there are 3,300 dedicated to Roadrunner), the company has a strong variable cost business model that provides very strong free cash flow and a high return on invested capital... The company has about 250 sales people, serving about 35,000 customers that they do business with. And they are now cross selling Roadrunner’s various services to every one of them...

* Wisconsin - DOA announces diesel truck grants

Madison,WIS,USA -Wisconsin Ag Connection -17 July 2013: -- The Wisconsin Department of Administration announced this week that $1 million in grant monies are available to common, contract and private motor carriers who want to reduce diesel truck idling... Program coordinators say that when idling is reduced on diesel trucks, it saves on fuel costs and lowers air pollution emissions... DOA Secretary Mike Huebsch says, the program's primary goals are to help Wisconsin motor carriers reduce air pollution emissions and fuel consumption. Wisconsin motor carriers are eligible to apply for cost-sharing funds through the Diesel Truck Idling Reduction Grant Program. The program provides Wisconsin-based trucking companies up to 50-percent reimbursement for idling reduction equipment and installation on heavy-duty diesel truck-tractors...
