* Europa: Truckmakers watch costs

Frankfurt,Germany -Financial Times (UK), by Chris Bryant -March 5, 2013: -- European truckmakers are set to keep careful control of costs in 2013 to allow investments in new low-emission vehicles after a year in which demand in key markets slowed and profits declined... Customers in crisis-hit Europe became hesitant and deferred investments last year, and in Brazil -a key market for several European truckmakers- customers had brought forward orders to 2011 because of new emission rules, causing a lull... Even in North America, where the market for heavy duty trucks expanded 15 per cent in 2012, orders started to decline in the final months of the year amid worries over budget and tax negotiations in Washington... Germany’s Daimler and MAN and Sweden’s Volvo and Scania responded by cutting costs, trimming production and reducing inventories, but in general they were unable to fully compensate for the lower orders and pressure on margins... Europe is preparing to introduce more stringent mandatory emission standards for heavy trucks in 2014 known as Euro VI, and truckmakers were therefore forced to maintain a high level of investment in new products...

The Volvo FM will be equipped with Volvo Dynamic Steering, which combines a conventional hydraulic power steering system with an electronically regulated electric motor fitted to the steering gear. (Mercedes-Benz Live Traffic: more up-to-date information thanks to realtime traffic data) Stuttgart,Germany -Daimler Trucks PR -March 6, 2013: -- In future, more comprehensive traffic information will be relayed to the vehicle more rapidly. The navigation system will be able to inform the Mercedes driver of traffic holdups at an early stage, so that he can quickly adapt his route planning according to the current traffic conditions...
