Canberra,ACT,USA -ATA Friday Facts/NTI -8 March 2013: -- The number of major crashes per 1000 trucks and trailers fell almost 43 per cent between 2003 and 2011, according to a new report... The National Transport Insurance (NTI) report looked at 461 truck accidents in 2011 that involved insurance claims of more than $50,000. NTI has published accident reports every two years since 2003... The report showed that the crash rate per 1000 units fell 42.7 per cent between 2003 and 2011, once the threshold used in 2003 is adjusted for inflation... The report found that the drivers of light vehicles or third parties were at fault in every fatal accident between a light vehicle and an NTI insured truck in 2011... Overall, inappropriate speed accounted for 25.4 per cent of the crashes in 2011, compared to 31.8 per cent in 2009. Driver fatigue caused 11.9 per cent of the crashes, marginally higher than in 2009 but still much lower than the 2007 figure, 20.7 per cent... The report said that non-impact fires were responsible for 12.1 per cent of the 461 losses...
