Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen,Germany -Gizmag, by David Szondy -March 7, 2013: -- Porsche is marking his anniversary at this month’s Geneva Motor Show by unveiling latest 911 GT3. The new high performance race track version of the 911 features a newly-engineered boxer engine, transmission, body and chassis to create what Porsche calls the “sportiest 911” with “a highly emotional fun factor" ... Porsche concentrates its attention on the engineering inside the classic bodywork. It’s as though Porsche’s engineers have a bet on how far they can take the little rear-engine coupé before the envelope shreds. The result is a remarkably evolving performance car – even if does try to climb trees on occasion... The 911 GT3 has a naturally-aspirated, 3.8-liter, 6-cylinder boxer engine... It packs 475 bhp (350 kW) at 8,250 rpm and maxes out at 9,000 rpm... With the lightweight chassis and body, this gives a power-to-weight ratio of 3.0 kg/hp... The 911 GT3 top speed of 315 km/h (195 mph) and an acceleration of 0 to 100 m/h (62 mph) in 3.5 seconds and 200 km/h (124 mph) in less than 12 seconds...
* Germany - Volkswagen wants 60 MPG fleet average in Europe by 2020
(The 2014 Volkswagen XL1, at 2013 Geneva Motor Show)
Wolfsburg,Germany -Green Car Reports, by ANTONY INGRAM -Mar 6, 2013: -- The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE - USA) target of 54.5 mpg by 2025 has caused cheers from some people, and jeers from others... In reality, that target won't be as difficult to hit as the numbers suggest, as the average on EPA window stickers will be lower--closer to 40 mpg in reality. For some though, that's still a little too much, too soon--and the standards have faced accusations that meeting them will damage business... Volkswagen is hoping to smash those limits in Europe, and far earlier than 2025--setting itself a target of nearly 60 mpg in Europe by 2020... In Europe, targets for efficiency are a little different from those in the U.S.... The European Parliament has set emissions limits, rather than economy targets--tightening standards every few years to reduce both CO2 emissions, and harmful hydrocarbon, particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide limits... The next level of these emissions, Euro 6, comes into force in 2014--though some vehicles already meet these conditions...
* Austria - Magna Steyr's retractable glass roof finds a home on Peugeot concept
Oberwaltersdorf,Austria -Giz
mag, by C.C. Weiss -March 7, 2013: -- One of the more versatile concepts to come out of last year's Geneva Motor Show was the Magna Steyr MILA Coupic. The concept used a unique retractable fastback-style roof to facilitate a three-for-one: convertible, sporty crossover and pick-up car. For this year's show, Magna Steyr packaged the concept in a more realistic skin, equipping the View Top roof to the Peugeot RCZ... Magna Steyr isn't really a household name to those that don't follow the industry closely, but the Austrian contract manufacturer works with many of the world's largest auto manufacturers in building components, systems and complete vehicles. One such vehicle is the Peugeot RCZ, which Magna Steyr has built more than 50,000 examples of...
* France - Compressing gas for a cheaper, simpler hybrid
(Photos: By Agnes Dherbeys for the International Herald Tribune: REVEALED A display model at the Peugeot Citroën technical center in France was created to show the position of the Hybrid Air system’s components)
Paris,France -The NYT, by DAVID JOLLY -March 1, 2013: -- It’s a Hybrid Air — an experimental vehicle that the French automaker PSA Peugeot Citroën has been trumpeting as an exemplar of energy efficiency. While some skeptics wonder if the Hybrid Air is truly a breakthrough technology, the Peugeot and Citroën research cars powered by it may prove to be some of the more intriguing models on display this week at the Geneva motor show. The show opens on Tuesday for two days of press previews and runs through March 17...
(PRESSURE POINTS The pressure tanks that hold the nitrogen gas and hydraulic fluid are positioned under the car)
Peugeot says a compact model like a Citroën C3 equipped with the technology, which combines hydraulic drive with a conventional gasoline engine, will get about 81 miles per gallon in city driving. That would be significantly better than existing gasoline-electric hybrids like the Toyota Prius can achieve in stop-and-go traffic... PSA Peugeot Citroën, the second-biggest carmaker in Europe, after Volkswagen, says it plans to begin rolling out Hybrid Air cars by 2015 or 2016...
