DRIVERS & TECHNICIANS SHORTAGE * WORLDWIDE

* USA - Driver pay not the answer to the driver shortage dilemma

Las Vegas,NEV,USA -Truck News (CAN))-Oct 9, 2012: -- Driver pay may be an important issue, and perhaps the one the gets the most attention when addressing the driver shortage, but it's not the best answer, according to a panel of US trucking executives speaking at the ATA Management Conference this morning... Placing drivers in quality equipment and getting them home more often are just as important, if not more so, than raising pay, said Derek Leathers, president and COO of Werner Enterprises... Werner reworked its network to get more of its drivers home on a weekly basis. Back in 2008 only 38% of its drivers we're getting home on a weekly basis; now it's up to 71%. Werner hires a lot of drivers out of driving school so its turnover rate is around 85%, but getting more of them home on a weekly basis helped keep the turnover rate from climbing higher, Leathers said...

* Canada - No University Degree, No Go?

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Today's Trucking –Oct 15, 2012: -- Last week, in a story about the Canadian workforce, the Globe and Mail quoted a Doctor Harvey Weingarten, President and CEO of the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO), on the matter of truck driving. Weingarten was quoted as saying he had met a Canadian carrier who insisted his drivers have university degrees. Truck…univ…what? Surprised, we contacted Dr. Weingarten. What carrier would he be talking about? “I don’t remember the guy’s name, it was a while ago, in Calgary,” Weingarten told todaystrucking.com. “It’s not that he won’t hire people without university degrees, his general point was that if he’s getting people with university degrees applying why wouldn’t he take them?” So as far as we know, there’s still no carrier who wants drivers to have a B.A. along with a CDL. But now it’s out there. So we asked one of our go-to HR experts, driver-recruitment specialist at Day and Ross Ann Finley, what she thinks of the notion.
