* Michigan / USA - Ford gets high EPA rating for C-MAX Energi plug-in

Dearborn,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Karl Henkel -October 12, 2012: -- Ford Motor Co.'s new C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid has received an Environmental Protection Agency-certified fuel-efficiency rating of 100 miles per gallon equivalent... The 100 mpge (108 city and 92 highway) tops the Chevrolet Volt, at 98 mpge, and the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid, which gets 95 mpge... Electricity is not measured in gallons; a conversion factor is used to translate the fuel economy when running on electricity into miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent. The combined mpge estimate includes a mix of gasoline and electric energy use... Ford's C-MAX Energi gets 20 miles of driving range in electric-only mode, compared to 11 for the Prius. The new Volt — technically a range-extended plug-in hybrid — gets 38 miles... Overall driving range, combined with gasoline and electric-only mode, favors the Energi (550 miles) and Prius (540) over the Volt (380)...

* DC / USA - NHTSA to probe Honda, Hyundai
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -October 13, 2012: -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it is opening two new investigations into Honda Pilot SUVs for improper involuntary braking and Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs for faulty steering columns... NHTSA said it is granting a petition filed in April to investigate 87,000 2005 Honda Pilot SUVs for unexpected vehicle deceleration or steering pull resulting from inappropriate electronic brake application... NHTSA said it has identified conditions that may result in false detection of a panic stop by the system, resulting in unexpected, severe braking... Furthermore, NHTSA said it is opening a new investigation into 70,000 2011 Santa Fe SUVs after receiving a complaint that a fastener became loose in the steering shaft, resulting in a complete loss of steering capability... NHTSA also has field report data from Hyundai that involved loosening of a bolt in the lower steering column of a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicle that resulted in a steering shaft separation...
* USA - NHTSA Investigating 2003-2004 Honda Odyssey for Alleged Ignition Interlock Defect

-The Car Connection, by Suzanne Kane -Oct 10, 2012: -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a preliminary investigation into alleged ignition interlock failures involving 577,100 Honda Odyssey minivan from the 2003 and 2004 model years... A report in the Wall Street Journal says the “alleged flaw can allow the driver to remove the vehicle’s ignition without properly shifting the transmission into park” ... The safety agency’s office of defects investigation (ODI) has received 42 complaints alleging failures of the ignition interlock, including 26 that resulted in rollaway incidents and 16 that involved a collision...
