* Europe - Marchionne: Crisis grows for European carmakers

Turin,Italy -The Detroit News, by Bryce G. Hoffman -October 11, 2012: -- Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, warned Wednesday that European automakers are fighting for their lives as demand for new vehicles continues to fall across the region... Marchionne's comments came as the ratings agency Moody's cut Fiat SpA's debt rating and warned that its probability of default would likely increase as the crisis in the Eurozone continues... But Fiat — which owns most of Auburn Hills-based Chrysler Group LLC — is not the only automaker being dragged down by Europe. Poor sales there are also weighing on General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co... And, according to Standard and Poor's, the situation is unlikely to improve anytime soon...
* USA - 'Big year' ahead for Chevrolet
Detroit,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Melissa Burden -October 11, 2012: -- Chevrolet will introduce 13 all-new or significantly updated models during 2013 in what one executive calls a "big year" for the General Motors Co. brand... Chevrolet has sold 1.42 million vehicles in the U.S. through September, up 4.9 percent from the same period in 2011... Its car sales are up 11 percent through September compared to the same months in 2011, helped by strong sales of the Spark mini car, subcompact Sonic and Cruze compact...

* Japan- Toyota recalls 7.43M vehicles

Tokyo,Japan -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -October 11, 2012: -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it is issuing its largest-ever recall — 7.43 million vehicles worldwide — to fix power window switches for fire risks. The recall includes 2.52 million vehicles in the United States... It's the latest setback for an automaker that has faced many issues in recent years... Toyota confirmed the new recall is the single-largest global recall campaign — though the company recalled 12.4 million vehicles worldwide from 2009-11 for unintended acceleration issues related to floor mats, including 10.2 million in the United States... The massive recall may be a setback to the company that has largely moved past the safety issues that drew worldwide attention in 2010 and included the testimony of the company's president before Congress... Toyota, which is on track to reclaim the title of world's largest automaker this year, suffered severe supply disruptions last year after the Japanese tsunami and earthquakes. And it has recently seen sales fall in China because of a dispute over islands in the South China Sea...
