* California - Consumer Reports: Special 'eco' car models don't pay off

Los Angeles,CAL,USA -Los Angeles Times -June 3, 2012: -- The special "eco" versions of small cars such as the Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus and Honda Civic don't improve fuel economy enough to be worth the extra money, according to an analysis by Consumer Reports... The magazine said it could take as long as 38 years for the extra cost to be worthwhile, depending on the vehicle... The cars, which come equipped with special low-rolling resistance tires and aerodynamic features, generally cost $500 to $800 more than fuel-efficient siblings that don't carry the "eco" label... Consumer Reports looked at the Ford Focus SFE, Chevrolet Cruze Eco and Honda Civic HF... The results: Consumer Reports found that the Cruze Eco saves drivers only $20 a year in gas purchases while the Focus SFE and Civic HF save consumers $145 and $135 a year, respectively...
* New York - Ford's May US New Vehicle Sales Up 13% On Strong Truck Sales
New York,NY,USA -Dow Jones Newswires/Fox Business -June 1, 2012: -- Ford Motor Co.'s, U.S. new-vehicle sales rose 13% in May from a year earlier on strong truck and Ford-brand sales... The company last month said it will produce nearly 40,000 additional vehicles this summer by idling 13 plants for just one week instead of the traditional two weeks, to better meet demand... Ford said it sold 216,267 vehicles in May in the U.S., up from 192,102 a year ago and 20% above April's total of 180,350... Ford brand, the company's largest, saw sales jump 13%... Earlier Friday, Chrysler Group LLC reported U.S. auto sales rose 30% in May as the auto maker had continued strength at its namesake brand... Company-wide, April car sales improved 6% as truck sales rose 21%. Utility-vehicle sales were up 12%... Chrysler said it sold 150,041 vehicles, up from 115,363 a year ago, and 6.3% above April’s total of 141,165. Truck sales jumped 24% while car sales were up 45%... GM reported it sold 245,256 vehicles in May, up from 221,182 a year earlier and 15% above April’s total...
