* Brazil - Tac Motors will have MotoCzysz make electric-SUV powertrain 

Joinville,Santa Catarina,BR -Autoblog Green, by Danny King -May 30, 2012: -- Brazil-based Tac Motors has reached an agreement for electric motorcycle maker MotoCzysz to make the electric powertrain for Tac's new electric SUV, the eStark... The agreement is worth about $27 million and will involve MotoCzysz making 3,600 powertrains – each about the size of a suitcase – per year for the new four-wheel-drive model. The eStark is particularly suited for electric-drive because of its light weight due to fiberglass panels and plastic covering... The Stark, whose conventional version is powered by a Fiat turbodiesel, is about 161 inches long, or about two feet longer than a Suzuki Samurai, in case anyone remembers those... 

 
* India - Jaguar Land Rover Puts Brazil Plant on Hold 
Mumbai,India -PMF Legal, by Anirban Chowdhury -May 31, 2012: -- Tata Motors Ltd.’s U.K.-based Jaguar Land Rover luxury car unit, has put on hold plans to build a vehicle assembly plant in Brazil, spooked by economic troubles in the South American nation and globally... A decline in industrial activity due to weak international demand, combined with a fall in the local currency, has hurt Brazil’s economy. This has spread caution among foreign investors, including auto makers, who until a few months ago viewed the country as one of the world’s most promising emerging automotive markets... Also, a surge in car loan defaults in the country has led banks to tighten lending facilities to customers. About 70% of all cars sold in Brazil are bought with loans, and the reluctance in lending is an important reason for the recent negative impact on demand... To encourage auto makers, Brazil’s government recently announced tax incentives, including relaxing higher taxes on cars that have fewer local parts. The automotive industry comprises about 20% of the country’s industrial activity... 


* Japan - JADA: New vehicle sales up 66.3%, Y/Y, Up for 9 Months 
Tokyo,Japan -MNI -June 1, 2012: -- New vehicle sales in Japan posted a ninth straight year-on-year rise in May on government subsidies and a recovery from a plunge caused by the March 2011 earthquake disaster, data released by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association on Friday showed... New vehicle sales rose 66.3% to 236,366 units in May, with the pace of gains decelerating from +92.0% in April and +78.2% y/y in March. Sales marked the first year-over-year gain in 13 months last September... Separately, the Japan Mini Vehicle Association reported that domestic sales of new small vehicles (with engine displacement of less than 660 cc) rose 66.6% y/y to 158,584 in May, the eighth straight year-on-year rise, following a 96.0% gain in March... 


* South Korea - Local OEMs post 8.9% rise in total sales 
Seoul.SK -Automotive World -June 01, 2012: -- South Korea's five vehicle manufacturers posted combined sales of 695,207 vehicles in May 2012, an increase of 8.9% compared with the 638,586 vehicles sold in the same month a year earlier...
 


* Japan - Fuji Heavy eager to discuss Toyota Camry contract

Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo,Japan -Bloomberg/The Japan Times -June 1, 2012: -- Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. President, Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, said the maker of Subaru cars is preparing to begin talks to renew its contract to build Camry sedans, the best-selling car in the U.S., for Toyota Motor Corp... While the company has orders to build the Camry until the model is overhauled in about four years, Fuji Heavy doesn't know whether Toyota will retain its services for the next generation of the midsize sedan, Yoshinaga said this week... Fuji Heavy, which uses about a third of its U.S. manufacturing capacity for the Camry, needs to know soon to determine its own expansion plans, he said... 


* China - VW to add direct-shift gearbox plant in
Tianjin,China -Automotive News China - 1 June 2012:  --  Despite Chinese customers' complaints about Volkswagen AG's direct-shift gearbox, the automaker will build a second plant in China to produce the transmission for locally built vehicles... VW will build the plant in the northern China port city of Tianjin, under an agreement the company signed with the local government... VW will spend 927 million euros (7.3 billion yuan) and construction will begin in August, according to the local government... Starting in 2014, the plant will produce 450,000 gearboxes annually, with output eventually rising to 1.35 million gearboxes a year...  


* Taiwan - Auto sales rebound in May 
Taipei,Taiwan -Central News Agency, by Chao Hsiao-hui and Ann Chen -1 June 2012: -- Taiwan auto sales in May climbed 9.1 percent from a month earlier and rose by 27.6 percent year-on-year to 31,213 vehicles, despite recent fuel price hikes in April. In terms of bestselling vehicles manufactured in Taiwan, the top three spots were all claimed by Japan's Toyota Motors, with sales of ALTIS models totaling 3,528 vehicles, followed by 1,700 CAMRY and CAMRY Hybrid models and 1,228 WISH cars... 


* Italy - Fiat offers gasoline discounts to lure Italian car buyers 

Turin,Italy -Bloomberg News/The Detroit News, by Tommaso Ebhardt -June 1, 2012: -- Fiat SpA is offering Italians a discount on gasoline purchases for as many as 3 years if they buy one of its cars by the end of July, it said in a statement Friday... Fiat car buyers will pay 1 euro per liter for gas and diesel until the end of 2015 after it signed an agreement with gas station retailer IP. Consumers would save about 45 percent on gas costs based on today's average price published on the Development Ministry website...

VBI Park,Horsens,Denmark -EV Discussion List, by Danny Kink -May 07, 2012: -- QBEAK, the city electric vehicle that's been pitched by Denmark-based ECOmove over the past year and a half, received this year's 'European Electric Vehicles Early Stage Investment Opportunity Award' from UK-based Frost and Sullivan, which said that ECOmove is "very close" to starting sales of the car. ECOmove is planning on offering QBEAK models with a single-charge range from 125 miles to about 190 miles...  ECOmove pitched an extra-light body made out of aluminum, Kevlar composites and plastics as well as recyclable body panels and a range of electric powertrains that could provide as many as 155 miles on a single charge...
