Grapevine,TEX,USA -Truck News, by Lou Smyrlis -Oct 16, 2011: -- It may be that being a market share leader in North American Class 6-8 truck sales makes for a more optimistic outlook, but Andreas Renschler, head of Daimler Trucks is not buying into all the economic doom and gloom... In his address to the media prior to the start of the American Trucking Associations convention Renschler acknowledged that economic indicators today are making it feel a bit like the fall of 2008 but was optimistic we would not see a return to global crisis... He added that the more real threat is a crisis of confidence...


* Texas - Daimler expanding Detroit Diesel brand
Dallas,TXS,USA -Fleet Owner, by Jim Mele -Oct 16, 2011:  --  Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will make its long-anticipated move to supply a broad range of integrated powertrain components next year, according to president & CEO Martin Daum... With its Detroit Diesel proprietary engines now installed in roughly three-quarters of its Freightliner and Western Star trucks, the company will add its own axles to the product mix under the new Detroit brand name, he said at a press conference...  Daum and Andreas Renschler, head to DTNA’s parent Daimler Truck Group, also broadly hinted that Detroit would soon follow with heavy and medium-duty transmissions as the company moves to fill out integrated powertain offerings in the North American market. The Detroit brand will be officially launched next March during the Mid-America Trucking Show...


* Illinois - Navistar Jumps Most in 17 Months After Icahn Discloses Stake

Warrensville,ILL,USA -Bloomberg, by Mark Clothier and Alan Ohnsman -Oct. 14, 2011: -- Navistar International Corp., the maker of International brand trucks, rose the most since May 2010 after billionaire Carl Icahn disclosed a 9.8 percent stake...  Navistar gained 7.3 percent to $41.51 at the close in New York, the most since May 10, 2010. The shares have dropped 28 percent this year...  Icahn’s purchase of 7.11 million Navistar shares or options to buy shares makes him the second-biggest holder of the Warrenville, Illinois-based truckmaker. Icahn, who buys positions in companies he considers to be under-performing and then pushes for change, has held talks with the management about adding people to its board, according to a filing late yesterday...  Icahn made millions in the 1980s pressuring companies from USX Corp. to Texaco Inc. to split up or increase dividends and stock buybacks...



* New York - Moody's boosts Paccar outlook to stable

New York,NY,USA -AP / Yahoo News -October 13, 2011:  --  Moody's Investors Service on Thursday raised its outlook for Paccar Inc.'s investment grade credit ratings to stable from negative, citing expectations that demand for heavy trucks will continue to grow through next year...  The ratings service expects the Bellevue, Wash., company to remain one of the top players in the global medium- and heavy-duty truck markets, and that demand from its key markets will continue to increase through 2012...  Moody's said it also expects Paccar to maintain plenty of operating and financial flexibility to handle the long-term cyclicality that the industry is known for...  Paccar shares fell 10 cents to close at $38.79...




* Illinois - Cat rolls out asset monitoring for CT660



Peoria,ILL,USA -Fleet Owner -Oct 17, 2011: -- Caterpillar has launched its Cat Product Link remote monitoring system for location identification of assets, including its new Cat CT660 vocational truck... Cat Product Link includes new cellular hardware and a web-based user interface called VisionLink that provides needed information to assist managers in the management of their machines and trucks... In addition to location data, Product Link will also provide truck-specific information, including mileage, engine, and transmission PTO usage updates, alerts for loss of main battery power, notification of non-authorized movement during “key-off” intervals, and access to odometer readings...




* Massachusetts - XL Hybrids launches fleet van trials

Boston,MASS,USA -Automotive World (UK) -October 18, 2011: -- XL Hybrids, a Boston-based developer of hybrid powertrains founded by MIT alumni, is to begin pilot testing of its technology with GM 2500 Series vans, including the Chevy Express and GMC Savana. The company says its hybrid powertrain can reduce urban fleets’ fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 20%...  XL Hybrids is working with equipment ‘upfit’ companies and fleet maintenance firms to certify them to install the hybrid powertrain on new and used vehicles, a process that takes less than a day. The company is initially targeting sales to fleets operating vans undertaking at least 25,000 miles per year in urban and suburban routes, and suggests they will see a three- to five-year payback...  The XL powertrain comprises a 2kWh lithium-ion battery pack, a 40kW (53bhp) electric motor and a proprietary hybrid control system that combines with GM’s 4.8-litre engine and automatic transmission. The system can provide an additional 240 lb ft of torque at the driveshaft when the hybrid electric motor assists during acceleration...




* Washington - “Microturbine” testing launched for heavy trucks

Bellevue,WASH,USA -Penton Media/Fleet Owner (NY) -Oct 18, 2011: -- Truck makers Kenworth Truck Co. and Peterbilt Motors Co. – both divisions of Paccar Corp. – are joining forces with Capstone Turbine Corp. on a project to test a “microturbine”-based hybrid-electric truck design for Class 7 and Class 8 platforms... Capstone said Kenworth already has a test truck equipped with one of its C65 microturbines currently running at the Paccar Test Center in Washington state, with Peterbilt’s test vehicle still in the assembly process...
