New Legislation * Europe - Will add €120 million to industry costs

Standardising the height of all new semi-trailers to four metres throughout Europe

Dublin,Ireland -HGV Ireland -October 30, 2010: -- Proposed new EU legislation aimed at standardising the height of all new semi-trailers to four metres in height throughout Europe will have dire consequences for an already fragile transport and freight industry in Ireland... Over the past 10 years, the Irish transport industry has invested in approximately 1,000 articulated trucks with a trailer height between 4.65 metres and 4.9 metres. Double-deck trailers allow for two load decks instead of one, effectively putting two trailer-loads on a single unit. The new legislation, which aims to standardise the height of all new semi-trailers built under Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) to four metres in height, will require more trailers to move the same amount of goods... Recent research conducted by Prof Alan McKinnon, of the Logistics Research Centre at Heriot-Watt University from the UK, has shown that the proposed EU ban on double-deck trailers would increase the UK’s annual road haulage costs by around £305 million and that switching from double-deck to standard trailers would increase fuel consumption and carbon emissions by a mid-range estimate of 64%. In terms of its impact on emissions, it would be equivalent to adding 150,000 new cars to Britain’s roads... (Photo from Roadtransport/big-lorry-blog: CityLink's double deck trailer)
