INFRASTRUCTURES * USA - Port of Long Beach to get new $950 million bridge

Preliminary construction will begin in 2011

Long Beach,CAL,USA -Land Line Magazine -November 5, 2010: -- The Port of Long Beach, CA, is embarking on a $950 million construction project to replace a bridge on a major shipping route that carries 15 percent of the nation’s containerized cargo moved by trucks... Port officials announced Wednesday, Nov. 3, that they have received final clearance from the California Transportation Commission and preliminary construction will begin in 2011... The replacement bridge, which will be a cable-stay design, will be 50 feet higher and have more clearance for ships than the current 1960s-era Gerald Desmond Bridge. The new one will feature three lanes plus emergency lanes in each direction to replace the current two in each direction... The bridge project is being funded with $500 million in state bonds, $300 million from the federal government, $114 million from the port, and $28 million from Los Angeles County...
In addition to bridge work, the project includes the reconstruction of the Terminal Island and Interstate 710 interchanges... Port officials announced that they are now seeking contractors to design and build the project. The current bridge will remain open during construction...
