DRIVERS' FATIGUE * Australia - VTA welcomes Victorian rest area strategy
VIC,Australia -ATA Friday Facts -5 Nov 2010: -- ATA member organisation, the Victorian Transport Association (VTA) has welcomed the release of the Victorian Rest Area Strategy by VicRoads last week... The strategy seeks to reduce fatigue-related incidents on the road by taking a holistic approach to the construction and location of rest stop areas across the state... In the past, VicRoads had largely left the planning for possible rest areas in rural and regional towns to local councils and shires... However, the new strategy now empowers VicRoads to assist local government and communities to develop plans to promote the use of in-town facilities... VTA CEO, Phillip Lovel, said the association had been heavily involved in the development of the strategy... The strategy also recognises informal rest areas, which will have a unique nationally consistent identification system. A road safety and physical infrastructure audit will be undertaken on these sites, and upgrades will be part of future planning... “This hard work by Rod has paid off … it’s now part of the formal rest area strategy in Victoria and we understand that other jurisdictions have agreed to follow suit” ...
