* Sweden - Volvo Trucks the first truck maker to offfer Bio-DME fuel for road going vehicles!
Gothenburg,Sweden -BigLorryBlog (UK) -September 9, 2010: ... Volvo Trucks is the first manufacturer in the world to use Bio-DME (Di-Methyl-Ether) as a 'regular' vehicle fuel with the inauguration this week of a DME filling station in Stockholm by Swedish fuel distributor Preem. As a consequence, the first five Volvo DME trucks in commercial operation are now taking to Sweden's roads... DME, a by-product of wood cellulose, is "highly exciting as a biofuel" say the people at Gothenburg "since it produces no less than 95% lower emissions of carbon dioxide compared with diesel" ... Perhaps more importantly it also requires minimal changes to a conventional diesel engine in order to run with it and has a similar energy level to normal derv... NINE FACTS you don't know about Bio-DME:
* Bio-DME delivers as high an efficiency rating and a lower noise level compared with traditional engines.
* Compared with diesel, Bio-DME produces no less than 95 per cent less carbon dioxide emissions.
* Also the combustion process produces very low emissions of particles and nitrogen oxides. All this together makes Bio-DME an ideal fuel for diesel engines.
* Although DME is a gas, it is transformed into liquid at a pressure of just 5 bar.
* Handling it is straightforward as it is no different to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in that regard.
* DME can be produced both from natural gas and from various types of biomass. When it is made from biomass, it is known as Bio-DME.
* Bio-DME is produced from black lye, an energy-rich, viscous by-product of the pulp industry. Chemrec's pilot plant in Piteå has the capacity to produce four tonnes of Bio-DME a day.
* This project is financed by EU's Seventh Framework Programme, the Swedish Energy Agency and participating companies.

* China - Truck makers take on global groups
Shanghai,SH,China -The Financial Times (UK), by Patti Waldmeir -September 8 2010: -- International truck makers are facing increasingly tough competition from Chinese commercial vehicle companies, which have already cornered the domestic market and are now aggressively moving on to the export market – especially south-east Asia and Africa... Fuelled in part by the Chinese government stimulus programme, China was the only major market to show growth in the number of vehicles produced in 2009, up 22 per cent... This strong growth allowed China to boost its share of the global market, by volume, to 49 per cent in 2009 from 20 per cent in 2006... Foreign truck makers will benefit from recovery in demand in Europe and North America, where Chinese trucks cannot compete because they cannot meet local emission standards... But in emerging markets which - Alix Partner’s Shanghai office - expects to produce 58 per cent of growth in commercial vehicle demand by 2014, China’s lower cost and lower technology commercial vehicles are posing stiff competition to global truck makers. Chinese exports of commercial vehicles, mostly to emerging markets in Africa and south-east Asia, rose 25 per cent in the first half of 2010 over the first half of last year, to 134,000 units...
