‘Motorways of the Sea’ *Europe - Italy's Grimaldi pulls out the project
Such services ought to be low enough to draw truck operators to move their traffic off
Napoli,Italy -Transport Intelligence (UK), by Thomas Cullen -20 Sep 2010: -- European Union attempts to manage the transport economy of Europe. Have received a blow with the withdrawal of ferry company Grimaldi from the first 'Motorways of the Sea' project... The route operates between the port of Nantes/St-Nazaire in France and the northern Spanish port of Gijon... The 'Motorways of the Sea' project is an idea promoted by the EU to reduce road motorway traffic within and between European countries... This means that the tariff on such services ought to be low enough to draw truck operators to move their traffic off, for example, the otherwise perfectly adequate roads in south western France and onto the ferry services... The programme's ambition foresees a network of shipping corridors in the Baltic, the North Sea, English Channel and Bay of Biscay, as well as the Mediterranean, yet so far the Nantes/St-Nazaire- Gijon operation is the first working service...
