STRIKES WORLDWIDE * Greece - Truckers stand firm ahead of reform vote
Athens,Greece -eKathimerini -20 Sept 2010: -- Truck drivers protesting plans to liberalize their sector hardened their stance over the weekend, saying they would keep their vehicles parked along key sections of the national road network unless the government stops the reforms from being voted through Parliament tomorrow... More than 800 trucks remained parked in long lines along key sections of the national road network on the outskirts of Athens for a seventh day. The longest blockades were at the junctions of Haidari and Elefsina, along with the Corinth toll gates... Government spokesman Giorgos Petalotis did not rule out the possibility of the truckers facing prosecution for hampering public transport... Fuel truck drivers, who up until late last night had not participated in the action in order to avert fuel shortages at gas stations, were reportedly considering joining the other truck drivers. If they do, motorists might face the same problems they did in late July, when an extended strike by truckers led gas stations to run out of fuel... (Photo from sofiaecho)

Athens,Greece –Handy Shipping Guide (UK) -14 September 2010: ... against what they see as an end to their monopoly on haulage throughout the country... Already overseas freight vehicles, mostly from Eastern Europe, have caused major damage to Greek firms trading abroad, and now plans to open up haulage to more competition have the drivers in revolt... Plans to reform the transport sector are backed by the EU and the IMF but currently native companies hold licences costing €30,000 per vehicle. So hauliers now see their money potentially being wasted if anyone has permission to operate... Today Parliament is due to debate commencement of the freight sector reforms in 2013, but mass demonstrations and more clashes are feared as truckers hold out for a seven year delay to any changes despite Government incentives... So far the domestic sector is under the spotlight, there were reports of conflict with overseas hauliers delivering and collecting international cargo and the likely outcome will be that there will be further resentment toward foreign transport operators shipping in or out of the country...

* Bahamas - Truckers Protest New MSC Policy. Ocean carrier said to seek port trucking monopoly in Freeport
Free Port,Bahamas -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Peter T. Leach -Sep 17, 2010: -- Independent truckers on the island of Grand Bahama are protesting a change in the trucking policy that Mediterranean Shipping Co. plans to put into effect on Sept. 20, which they say will adversely affect their business... The truckers said MSC, which transships many of its U.S.-bound containers at Freeport on the island, has issued a notice that it plans to increase the charge for local delivery of containers from the port from $120 to $295 and that “MSC proposes to give only one trucking service the exclusive right to move those containers at a price which they will set” ... Independent truckers accused MSC of seeking to enter the trucking business by threatening to monopolize the container movements in and out of Freeport, which they said is reserved by law for Bahamians... They called on the Bahamas Government, and the Grand Bahama Port Authority to enter the dispute and “stop MSC from doing what it proposes” ...
