* Sweden - Scania ups Europe hires to cope with truck demand. Boost Production as Demand Rises
Stockholm,Sweden -MarketWatch -Aug. 24, 2010: -- Swedish truckmaker Scania on Tuesday said it will hire 500 additional employees at its European production units to cope with increased demand from truck markets outside Europe... In a press release, the group said half the hires will be in Sweden to deal with higher production expected for the fourth quarter of 2010. Within Europe, Scania said the market is continuing to recover but "remains at a low level in a historical perspective" ... * India - Chinese, Japanese truck makers to drive into
Mumbai,India -The Economic Times/India Times, by Lijee Philip -23 Aug, 2010: ... Now it’s the turn of the local truckmakers who may be forced to change their stodgy ways as two Japanese players—Isuzu and Hino—and two Chinese firms—FAW and Foton— are giving finishing touches to their India plans... Top executives of these companies have in recent months held a series of discussions with potential dealers to set up joint ventures or enter distribution and marketing tie-ups with companies, according to industry observers and dealers... Hino Motors, part of the Toyota group, is now looking at setting up a manufacturing facility in the country. Hino, which has a strong market presence in South-East Asian and Middle East markets has products across the spectrum—a light commercial vehicle range in the 3-7 tonne, ‘Dutro’, the seven-tonne Dyna range and the 16-49 tonne Hino brand... Isuzu which has a stake in Swaraj Mazda is exploring the possibility of launching smaller commercial vehicles and buses... Chinese truck maker Foton has competitively priced models in the low- to mid-range, popularly called the Forland series. It plans to directly enter the Indian market by setting up a plant in Pune... China-based FAW has a tie up with Ural India to market buses and manufacture dumpers, trucks and low-floor buses... Recently SAIC, another Chinese auto major which picked a majority stake in General Motors India plans to launch its Wuling range of trucks in the country by 2011... These foreign companies are lured by the demand potential in the Indian truck market, which grew 50%, to 2.01 lakh units (lahk: is a unit in the Indian numbering system equal to one hundred thousand 100000), in April-July this year from the year-ago period, and expect to sell 8-10 lakh units in the year ending March 2011, compared with last year’s 5.3 lakh units...
