DRIVERS' SHORTAGE * South Africa - Developing, attracting youth key to trucking industry
The lack of skills is a significant challenge to the truck building industry
Olifantsfontein,Gauteng,South Africa -Engineering News, by Karishma Thakurdin -20 August 2010: -- The lack of skills is a significant challenge to the truck building industry and more initiatives are required to raise awareness and attract the youth into this sector, reports specialist manufacturer of load bodies for commercial vehicles TFM Industries... TFM Industries CEO Johan van der Merwe, tells that there is a significant shortage of skilled personnel at different job levels within the truck industry, given that new technologies are regularly being improved to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint and meet emission control standards. “As technology develops, a technician is also required to upskill and have [an excellent understanding] of the technologies to build or repair trucks,” he adds... For example, new emission control initiatives are controlled by advanced electronic systems, which require technicians to have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the electronics to maintain a truck... He believes that the trucking industry is not considered a glamorous or high-paying industry and, therefore, it does not frequently feature in ‘top career’ lists...
