TRUCKING STATISTICS * USA - Truckload Freight Index Drops 8.3 Percent

Dry-van capacity falling faster than demand, Morgan Stanley index shows

New York,NY,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -Jul 14, 2010: -- Slow sequential moderation in truckload demand resumed after a spike before the July 4 holiday, Morgan Stanley Research reports in its latest freight index... Contract truckload rates are beginning to rise, however, signaling continued tight capacity and higher truck pricing in the second half of 2010, Morgan Stanley said... Morgan Stanley's Truckload Freight Index, which measures incremental demand against incremental supply, dropped 8.3 percent from July 2 to July 9... The Morgan Stanley TFI index is down 16 percent from its May 14 peak... But capacity is falling faster than demand, according to the July 9 index, and a comparison with previous years indicates more capacity could leave...

Los Angeles,CAL,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -Jul 14, 2010: -- The Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index dropped 1.9 percent in June after gaining 3.1 percent in May, contributing to signs the economy is slowing... The index also slowed in the second quarter, growing at an annualized rate of 6.2 percent compared with 9.7 percent growth in the first quarter of 2010... The index, based on diesel sales to truckers, reflects weaker freight demand in June, but not a recovery in reverse, says PCI Chief Economist, Edward Leamer... The index declined slightly in three of the first six months of 2010. Its month-to-month decrease in June to 109.3 was off a historic high of 111.4 in May...
