ANTIQUES / FUTURISTIC and UP TO DATE TRUCKS * WORLDWIDE

* UK - Jay Leno's Garage ... another ancient Autocar

London,UK -BigLorryBlog -July 13, 2010: -- Did you enjoy this old Autocar photo I posted up on Biglorryblog the other day whilst I was on hols? Well Roy Larkin, author & publisher of 'Destination Western Front' and the man behind Historic Roadways website at has sent me this link and he says: "... the weblink above is quite fun. Maybe the first tilting cab?..." (Photo from Autocaroldie one)

* UK - Michael's Futuristic Volvo adds more space for the driver but within the same artic dimensions

Coventry,UK -BigLorryBlog -July 13, 2010: -- The access is certainly good...but I'm just not sure about the air-con! ... This wonderful piece of cutaway futuristic truck design, it's been done by talented young designer Michael Gillet who's just completed four year degree course at Coventry University... The above truck, called the 'Columbus artic' in detail the next edition but in the meantime Michael and Will have kindly provided me with some shots of the tractor--which is based on an existing FH... The truck for tomorrow was Mike's final year project as an Automotive Design Student at Coventry and he tells BLB that as many of his contemporaries tend to go for the obvious sports or eco car it's difficult to 'stand out from the crowd... So to solve the space problem Mike has come up with an extendible section to the rear of the cab that slides back in (like this above) when the truck is operating normally thereby allowing plenty of room for trailer swing clearance...and when the truck is parked up... And with the sleeper extension closed up and the cab tilted showing access to the engine... Last but not least showing it closed up with the swing-out steps ala Argosy again...good though on the access issue and great work Michael, and he asks me to point out: " The designer and the design have no links to Volvo Trucks or AB Volvo..."

* Italy - Iveco daily range extended with new 7.0-tonne models

Torino,Italy -BigLorryBlog (UK) -July 14, 2010: ... Iveco has extended its range of Daily and EcoDaily light commercial line-up with new 7.0 tonne van, chassis cab and crew cab models. Not surprisingly the new seven-tonne warrior offers an increase in payload capacity of 470 kg compared to a regular (and previously heaviest) 6.5-tonne variant, providing over 4,700 kg of body and payload capacity for chassis cab models---more than many 'medium-range' trucks says Iveco. Indeed it goes to prove what Biglorryblog has long been saying---namely that if you want get maximum payloads from a light truck then a 'van-based model' like Daily or Sprinter or Vario of Mascott is the way to go---as opposed to a purpose built 7.5-tonner... * Sweden - Volvo Concept Truck 2020, depicts some futuristic truck technology, with aerodynamics and autopilot

Stockholm,Sweden -The Herald Sun (UK), by James Stanford -14 July 2010: -- The Swedish trucking giant has come up with the Concept Truck 2020 a rendering of what it expects drivers will use to haul freight in 10 years from now...Volvo uses the concept truck to predict some elements of future of truck technology, including an autopilot feature that would allow drivers to relax for long periods of the trip...The interior of the concept truck is spacious with a clean and crisp, uncluttered, design. Traditional rows of dials and gauges have been replaced by a single digital instrument panel that glows blue... (Images from carsguide.com.au: This is what the truck of 2020 will look like according to Volvo)
