(Photo VW's Truck, model Constellation)

Sao Bernardo do Campo,Sao Paulo,Brazil -BigLorryBlog (UK) -June 2, 2010: --Now here's the wonderful Cummins-powered Volkswagen Constellation Titan (seen here in South Africa) and not so long ago it was rumoured to be coming to the UK, or at least Europe... So why am I showing you a picture of the Brazilian-built Constellation? Well because since MAN took on VW's heavy truck operation in Brazil word reaches me that MAN Latin America has just supplied three operators with Constellations that run on 100% biodiesel and which feature a new dual-fuel technology... and of course Brazil is the place when alternative fuels have long been used including ethanol derived from sugar cane. Meanwhile, MAN is now building and selling the TGX and TGS in South America...

(Photo: MAN's TGX from Brazil)

... MAN's plant in Resende Brazil has a capacity to build up to 5,000 TGX and TGS heavy trucks per year and right now test vehicles are being built so that the first vehicles 'proper' ordered can be delivered in 2011 to three of Brazil's largest transport operators: Julio Simoes, Arcom and Binotto. In the first phase, Brazilian MAN trucks will contain units imported from Germany and be assembled in line with the SKD (semi-knocked-down) principle. In the medium term the aim is to raise the local content of production to at least 60%. MAN trucks will be sold in Brazil via the VW dealer network run by MAN Latin America. By 2011 a 'supplier' park too will also be built in the immediate vicinity of the Resende plant where three partners of MAN Latin America - ArvinMeritor (axles), Maxion (chassis assembly) and Suspensys (suspension systems) - will have their own production facilities directly next to the MAN plant...

* USA - Hybrid truck use to grow exponentially, to reach 300,000 by 2015. The US, currently leader, to lose the spot to China

Boulder,CO,USA -Autoevolution -3 June 2010: -- Another study into how the hybrid-electric vehicles' market will evolve over the next five years has been released by Pike Research, this time trying to estimate how many trucks and buses will be on the roads by 2015... According to Pike, some 300,000 such vehicles will be roaming the streets, providing in between 5 and 50 percent reduction in fuel consumption. To have an idea on how this huge market will evolve, we must take into account that currently there are around 9,000 hybrid buses and trucks on the roads of the world... As with the other segments of the hybrid and electric market, although the US is currently leader, it will most like lose the number one spot to Asia, which is catching up fast through China and Japan... Earlier this week, Pike named China the most likely to succeed when it comes to leading the EV battery market. The outlook is China will account for 53 percent of the world's battery sales (estimated at 8 billion)... Pike believes that sales of electric vehicles in Asia will reach 1.1 million in 2015, more than the EV sales in the US and Europe combined... (Photo from autoevolution)

* Brazil - MAN testing B100 trucks with onboard mixing unit

Sao Bernardo do Campo,SP,Brazil -Fleet Owner, by Brian Straight -June 4, 2010: -- MAN Latin America said this week it has given three customers in Brazil trucks that feature dual-fuel technology which can blend biodiesel on board the vehicle... The trucks, part of the company’s Constellation line, include two separate tanks, one that handles traditional diesel and a second which accepts B100, or 100% biodiesel. An electronic onboard system monitors the parameters for the use of biodiesel and adjusts the fuel supply as needed. This allows the truck to continue operating in areas where biodiesel not meeting European DIN EN 14214 standards is not available... The trucks can run on B100 or pure diesel, depending on the availability of fuel and the current requirements of the application. In Brazil, the use of 100% renewable raw materials for fuel is common and can cut CO2 emissions by up to 90%, MAN said... (Photo from automotriz.net: Fenatran VW)
