Nashville,ALA,USA -Fleet Owner -May 26, 2010: -- Truckload carrier Western Express of Nashville has ordered 900 Freightliner Cascadia tractors powered by Detroit Diesel Corp. DD15 engines meeting the 2010 federal emissions standards. The order is the first installment of a three-year agreement to purchase 2,800 trucks from Freightliner, according to Wayne Wise, the fleet’s president and CEO... The EPA 2010 DD15 diesel engines use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to meet the stricter emissions rules while improving fuel economy by up to 5%, according to Daimler Trucks North America, the parent of both Freightliner and DDC... Cassidy -May 25, 2010: -- Net orders for heavy-duty trucks shot up 91 percent in April, as fleets began placing orders for trucks compliant with 2010 federal emissions rules, ACT Research said... New orders were spread over the next three quarters, indicating that truck operators are beginning to cycle out older equipment and replace it with more expensive 2010 models... That reflects gathering strength in the freight economy, with truckload and less-than-truckload carriers reporting significant gains in volume in March and April... Several companies announced large Class 8 orders in late May. Western Express is buying 900 Freightliner Cascadia tractors with DD15 engines from Detroit Diesel, while Boyd Bros. Transportation ordered 325 International ProStar trucks from Navistar... One of the biggest orders last month came from Penske Truck Leasing, which ordered 600 VN670 tractors from Volvo and 750 Freightliner Cascadia tractors in May... All the fleet operators said they anticipated achieving better fuel economy and greater savings with the 2010 trucks...


* Truck Trailer Orders Slow in April. Net orders from truckers drop 13 percent from March as companies signal wariness

-- Net orders for trailers in April dropped 13 percent from March, according to ACT Research, as trucking companies signaled they are growing uncertain about the strength of an economic recovery... Net orders of dry vans and reefer vans, the largest trailer volume categories, each softened slightly in April compared to March, while flatbeds and other specialty segments continued to gain strength... It’s still a recovery compared with the deep decline seen in 2009. April net orders for trailers were 3 percent higher than a year ago, and trailer orders through the first four months of the year were up 72 percent, ACT Research said... But various measures, including Morgan Stanley’s Truckload Freight Index suggest the increase in demand is leveling off... Columbus, Ind.-based ACT Research noted overall net orders still supersede build rates that have boosted the order backlog to its highest level in 20 months...
