STATISTICS * USA - DOT Freight Transport Index Improves

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -9 June 2010: -- The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 4.8% in April from a year ago, marking the second consecutive increase... The 2.6% gain in March had marked the index’s first year-to-year increase since July 2008... The index improved 0.3% in April from March, marking the third straight month-to-month gain, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said in its monthly report...


* NAFTA Trade Value Soars 37 Percent

Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Joseph Bonney -Jun 1, 2010: -- Cross-border shipment value improves 17.6 percent from February to March... The value of cross-border road, rail and pipeline shipments between the U.S. and Canada, and the U.S. and Mexico rose 37 percent in March from a year earlier, but was still 1.2 percent below its March 2008 level, the Department of Transportation reported... The $69.9 billion in cross-border shipments in March was 17.6 percent above the February number... The value of U.S. surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico in March was up 17.7 percent compared to March 2005, and up 33.6 percent compared to March 2000, a period of 10 years. Imports in March were up 31.8 percent compared to March 2000, while exports were up 35.8 percent... U.S.–Canada surface transportation trade totaled $42.1 billion in March, up 35.6 percent compared to March 2009. The value of imports carried by truck was 19.4 percent higher in March 2010 compared to March 2009, while the value of exports carried by truck was 30.4 percent higher during this period... U.S.–Mexico surface transportation trade totaled $27.8 billion in March, up 39.1 percent compared to March 2009. The value of imports carried by truck was 39.0 percent higher in March 2010 than March 2009 while the value of exports carried by truck was 31.6 percent higher...
