TRUCKING INDUSTRY * USA - North Caroline - Old Dominion Poised to Pick Up Competitors’ Freight, CEO Says
Thomasville,NC,USA -Bloomberg, by Angela Greiling Keane -Nov. 6, 2009: -- Old Dominion Freight Line Inc., a U.S. regional trucker, has extra capacity ready in case its industry consolidates, its chief executive officer said... The company is a less-than-truckload hauler, meaning it takes freight or goods from more than one customer in a truck... “We kept the trades as opposed to selling them in anticipation that there might be a major industry consolidation event,” CEO David Congdon said... “In general right now, there is I would estimate 20 to 25 percent excess capacity in the industry,” Congdon said, if YRC “were go to out of business, it would bring the supply-demand equilibrium back to normal” ... Asked about Congdon’s comments, Suzanne Dawson, an outside spokeswoman for YRC Worldwide Inc., the largest less-than-truckload U.S. hauler, she said “YRC does not comment on rumors from others”...
* New York - UPS Chief Targets Supply-Chain, Medical Acquisitions
New York,NY,USA -Bloomberg, by Mary Jane Credeur -Nov. 6,2009: -- United Parcel Service Inc., the world’s largest package-delivery company, is looking for acquisitions to bolster its supply-chain and freight-forwarding units, Chief Executive Officer Scott Davis said... UPS has made more than 40 purchases in the past decade, and there are “likely to be some more” in the coming year, Davis, 57, said today in an interview in New York. China, India and the Middle East are at the “top of the list” for expansion, as is the health-care industry, he said... UPS also wants to expand its services for handling health- care products, Davis said... UPS’s largest recent deal was the 2005 purchase of Overnite Corp. for $1.25 billion in cash to expand its freight unit. That’s not an area where UPS is looking for more acquisitions, said Davis, who was at the New York Stock Exchange to mark the 10th anniversary of the company’s initial public offering... The Kenworth AG130 front air suspension is disc-brake compatible and available in 12,000-lb. and 13,200-lb. ratings for the Kenworth T660, T800 and T2000 Class 8 models. The AG130 features a four air-bag configuration while other competitive suspensions typically have just two air bags. The four air bags, which handle the majority of the vertical load while a lower leaf spring handles the remainder, help the suspension to resist high input torque encountered with disc brakes... The design reduces vibration into the cab and onto the chassis to help provide a smooth ride without sacrificing the feel of the road that customers expect from a Kenworth...
* Tennessee - Kenworth T800s Deliver Productivity Gains For Aggregate Hauler
Murfreesboro,Tenn,USA -Layover -5 Nov 2009: -- In aggregate hauling, the name of the game is payload, speed, and reliability... Resource Management Company (RMC) began operation in 1989 with a fleet of used trucks. As business grew, it decided to put two new Kenworth T800s into service. "It was a great decision," recalled Mosley... Today, the company runs 28 Kenworth T800s purchased through MHC Kenworth - Nashville. Over the years, RMC has made adjustments in spec'ing. The company also moved to a new U-shaped "tub" dump body, which is about 3,500 pounds lighter than the fleet's previous dump bodies... According to Mosley, on the latest order of Kenworths, RMC went with Allison automatic transmissions with 425-hp engines... While adding more payload means more dollars per delivery, the automatic transmissions have meant faster acceleration and reduced drive time to job sites...
