Randy Yeakey always wanted to save someone’s life
Dunn,WI,USA -The Dunn County News, by LIZ HOCHSTEDLER -October 2, 2009: -- Inspector Yeakey, of Bloomer, received a lifesaving award from the State Patrol earlier this month... Through 19 years with the Wisconsin State Patrol, his lifesaving skills were never needed. But on April 20, he became a hero for Mark Mittelstadt... He was driving down Highway 170 when he came upon a rolled over shingle delivery truck... “When the crash happened, I was about a mile down the road behind it,” he said... He grabbed his pry bar and first aid kit and ran to the truck... “The cab was crushed to the point where his head was pinned, and it was blocking his airway,” Yeakey recalled... Mittelstadt hung from his seatbelt as the driver’s side of the truck was facing up. Yeakey moved quickly to break the windshield, cut the seatbelt and carry Mittelstadt from the vehicle... Kevin Brown, a passerby, helped Yeakey pull Mittelstadt from the truck and lay him in the ditch... “(Mittelstadt) wasn’t breathing, and there was no pulse at that time, so I started CPR and chest compressions,” Yeakey said... Two chest compressions were enough to restart Mittelstadt’s heart... Later Mittelstadt was transported by ambulance to Red Cedar Medical Center, and Yeakey immediately began his regular duties of inspecting the truck... He was awarded the State Patrol’s lifesaving award... “The award is special,” Yeakey said. “It was a huge career goal that I wanted to save someone’s life”... His efforts, and those of his fellow officers, show the public that law enforcement is needed, he said...
