Toronto,ONT,CAN -Land Line Magazine, by David Tanner -October 2, 2009: -- Attention, hazmat haulers hauling into Canada: The federal transportation ministry no longer accepts a hazardous materials endorsement as the sole evidence that a driver has completed necessary training... Additional proof is now required in the form of a certificate of training, according to Transport Canada. These certificates, obtained at the completion of required training, must be available to show to inspectors, said Transport Canada spokeswoman, Maryse Durette... * Canada - Ontario restricts phone use for drivers
Toronto,ONT,CAN -Land Line Magazine, by David Tanner -October 2, 2009: -- A new law in the province of Ontario takes effect this month to ban text messaging for drivers, but the restriction goes further. The ban also applies to talking on the phone while driving unless the driver uses hands-free technology to dial and talk... Drivers convicted of texting, typing, dialing or e-mailing with a hand-held device can face $500 fines... The law applies to vehicles in motion and makes an exception for stopped vehicles that don’t impede traffic... According to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, “a person may drive a motor vehicle on a highway while using a device … in hands-free mode”...
* USA - FasTracks Project Helps Minority Truck Drivers
Denver,CO,USA -CBS4, by Paul Day -Oct 1, 2009: -- A dump truck driver intends to put this children through college with his earnings from the new FasTracks project... To win the job, Matthew Antoine's operation had to qualify as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, or DBE... He and his wife Judith live in a modest home in Aurora and have five kids. The FasTracks job means Judith can cut-back to part-time employment and spend time where it really matters... "I'm here when my children go to school and I'm here when they come home," says Judith... "It allows me to take care of my family," said Antoine, who projects his annual profits from the job "in the six digits." His company, Simon Elite Trucking, makes no loan payments on his 2 tractors and five trailers, he owns the rigs outright...
