Washington,DC,USA -AP, by KEN THOMAS -1 Oct 2009: -- The Obama administration said Thursday it will seek to ban text messaging by interstate bus drivers and truckers and push states to pass their own laws against driving cars while distracted... President Barack Obama signed an executive order late Wednesday banning all federal workers from texting while driving on government business, driving government vehicles or using government equipment... The administration also will push to disqualify school bus drivers who are convicted of texting while driving from keeping their commercial driver's licenses... Researchers, safety groups, automakers and lawmakers gathered to discuss the perils of distracted driving, hearing sobering data from the government that underscored the safety threat as more motorists stay connected with cell phones and mobile devices... High Plains Trucking Owner and Operator, Doug Landru, says he sees at least a dozen people behind the wheel each day who are not focused on the road... Laptops, cell phones and CB's provide a lot of technology so that truck drivers can keep business going, but now there's talk in Washington to determine whether federal legislation is needed, and which devices, if any, should be banned...


* Truckers Say Computers in Cab Not Distracting

Springfield,ILL,USA -KXMU -1 Oct 2009: ... We met up with Pat McGuire of O&S Trucking in Springfield, and had a look inside his cab. He had a laptop computer with a 14-inch screen which he uses for GPS and directions, as well as a separate device with its own keypad and smaller screen, through which he communicates with his dispatcher... McGuire said he only glances at the screen of the laptop for directions while driving, but does not type on the keypad. He added that when he receives a message on the other device, he pulls over at a truck stop or rest area to check it and reply...
