TRUCKER HERO * USA - Trucker honored with Carnegie heroism award
A Firestone man who saved two young sisters from their mother’s burning car after the car hit his truck head-on has been awarded a Carnegie medal for heroism
Longmont,CO,USA -The Times-Call -30 Sept 2009: ... Jorge L. Orozco, 30, was one of 15 people honored with a Carnegie medal Tuesday. Three, who died while trying to save others, were honored posthumously... Orozco said someone had told him about the Carnegie Hero Medals eight or 10 months ago, but that he never expected to receive one himself... “I was driving my truck and I knew no one would hear me, so I started screaming and yelling,” Orozco said. “I kept screaming until I got tired. It really is an honor”... Orozco, an independent trucker from Firestone, was driving on Colo. Highway 392 near U.S. Highway 85 last October when Melissa Nicklas’ SUV drifted across lanes and into his path. The crash left both vehicles in flames... Nicklas died in the collision, but Orozco was able to pull himself and Nicklas’ two young daughters from the wreckage... When he finally got the call from Carnegie, he said, he couldn’t believe it...
