* Brazil - Iveco Electric Daily LCV prototype begins testing in
Sao Paulo,Brazil -Gizmag (USA) -September 3, 2009: -- Iveco is showing a prototype of its new Electric Daily in Brazil, a vehicle destined to become the first zero emission light commercial vehicle produced in Latin America. The vehicle has regenerative braking, a range of 100km (65 miles) and a fully-laden top speed of 70kmh (43mph)... This new project is a collaboration between Iveco and Itaipu Binacional, an organization which manages the largest hydroelectric generating station in the world, on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. The prototype, based on a crew cab Daily 55C, is equipped with three sealed Zebra Z5 sodium, nickel and chloride batteries. * Japan - Hino Motors Will Hire 900 Temporary Workers
Tokyo,Japan -Bloomberg, by Kiyori Ueno and Yuki Hagiwara -Sept. 3, 2009: -- Hino Motors Ltd., Japan’s largest maker of heavy trucks, will hire 900 temporary workers in the country starting this month as it predicts truck demand will increase in Asia... Hino has forecast net income of 5 billion yen ($54 million) in the second half of the year ending in March compared with an expected 29 billion yen loss in the first half. Nikko Citigroup Ltd. upgraded its rating on the truckmaker to “hold” last month, citing higher earnings in the second half helped by stronger overseas demand...
* China - Truck growth could help U.S. fleets
New York,NY,USA -Fleet Owner, by Sean Kilcarr -Sep 3, 2009: -- A new analysis of China’s commercial truck market finds that demand for heavier chassis and cleaner diesel engines will spike over the next five years, offering potentially big revenue-generating opportunities for U.S. and European truck makers. And that positive result could also benefit U.S. truck fleets by lowering the cost of emission control technologies... According to the report due out next week from research firm Frost & Sullivan titled “Strategic Analysis of the Chinese Commercial Vehicle Market”, that country’s commercial truck production is projected to expand from 1.92 million units in 2008 to over 2.68 million units by 2015 – resulting in a compound annual growth rate of 4.9%. That growth is being driven by several factors, including new roadway weight limit rules, increased fuel taxes, and the harmonization of China’s truck emission statutes with those of the U.S. and Europe, said the report... The end result, noted Sandeep Kar, program manager &senior industry analyst with Frost & Sullivan’s North American automotive & transportation practice, is that China’s truck manufacturers are increasingly looking to forge partnerships with U.S. and European truck OEMs to gain design expertise in fuel economy and emission control systems...
* USA - Oshkosh demonstrates TerraMax autonomous vehicle system
TX,USA -Gizmag, by Paul Lester -September 3, 2009: -- The ability of military vehicles to better protect occupants with modern designs and high-tech materials has become an increasing priority and UK firm Amsafe has already seen success with its Tarian armor plating in the U.S. Oshkosh Defense, part of the U.S. Marine Corp’s MRAP (Mine-Resistant, Ambush Protected) program, is also heavily involved and a recently announced armor system took an alternative approach with an emphasis on mobility. Development of its new TerraMax vehicles seems almost flawless in its potential, however, at least in protecting the lives of the soldiers on board because, put simply, there aren’t any... TerraMax, the latest in unmanned ground vehicles (UGV), was recently demonstrated by the Wisconsin-based company, a leading contributor to autonomous vehicle technology, at the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) and Fort Hood III Corps Robotics Rodeo in Texas...
