* Canada - Soaring loonie hurting trucking industry
Portage la Prairie,Manitoba,Canada -The Daily Graphic/Herald-Leader -5 Sept 2009: -- People who currently work in the transport industry say now may not be the best time to get into a trucking career... The relatively strong Canadian dollar has wreaked havoc with the industry up north as people in the United States don’t buy Canadian materials or products as much anymore, said Paul Stanley, owner of Principle Logistics freight brokerage in Portage la Prairie... As an indication of how bad it has gotten, he noted, even large transport companies like YRC (formerly Reimer Express Lines Ltd.) and Day & Ross Inc. are calling him to check if he can connect them with a company that has freight to haul to keep their employees busy... A decade ago, there were plenty of shipments going south with a few coming back up north, meaning transport companies made their money when they left Manitoba for the U.S. Now, however, Stanley pointed out, that situation is completely reversed, with not many shipments heading south and more heading north, meaning the money is made on the return trips... * USA - Energy Department Forced to Release Photos of Trucks Used to Transport Nuclear Bombs and Components and Nuclear Weapons Materials
Columbia,SC,USA -Friends of the Earth/Common Dreams, by Tom Clements -September 3, 2009: -- Friends of the Earth announced today it has used the Freedom of Information Act to force the U.S. Department of Energy to release color photos of the special trucks that transport nuclear weapons, nuclear weapons components and "special nuclear material" such as plutonium and highly enriched uranium.
