Fiat bringing Iveco trucks stateside
Torino,Italy -Autoblog, by Noah Joseph/Mopar Muscle -2 Sept 2009: -- The Fiat group seems to be on a ceaseless campaign to bring its products to the U.S. market... Fiat CEO, Sergio Marchionne, has announced plans to bring the group's heavy truck subsidiary Iveco to the American market. But while the 500 and Alfas may take a while to make the trip, Marchionne has a much tighter time-frame in mind for Iveco, declaring that they company "will have something done within six to nine months." That's mighty soon... Iveco, short for Industrial Vehicle Corporation, builds close to half a million diesel engines and some 200,000 commercial vehicles every year, including heavy trucks, military vehicles, fire engines, buses, vans and even a formula racing truck that makes NASCAR Craftsman Series trucks look like toys...
* USA - MB Takes Over US Sprinter Business (COMMENT)
Montvale, NJ,USA -Road Transport (UK) -2 Sept 2009: -- No real surprise here - Fiat's acquisition of most of Chrysler had rendered the Dodge Sprinter situation as unsustainable, and so the news that MB USA gets the job - through the creation of Daimler Vans LLC - was predictable. US Sprinter will become a Mercedes-Benz product, and the curtain thus falls on the rebadging business that has seen three-pointed stars replacing Dodge insignia across middle America... But the timing is interesting. The handover is effective as of January 1st, and we wonder if this will coincide with the arrival of Iveco's Daily to American shores. That Iveco is working on such a strategy is a given, but whether or not it will be ready by January remains to be seen. As will be the willingness of the existing MB USA network to pony up a reputed $50,000 a time to take on the LCV franchise...
* USA - Volvo VN Drives Success at National Truck Driving Championships
Arlington,VA,USA -The Journal of Commerce -Sep 2, 2009: -- When performance and pride are on the line, the top drivers in the trucking industry choose the Volvo VN for the winning edge. Once again, the Volvo VN proved itself the first choice of professional drivers, as more than three-quarters of the top drivers at (NTDC) drove Volvo VNs to podium finishes... Volvo VNs were driven by 16 out of 21 top three finishers in seven categories where Volvo VNs were available, including six first-place finishes. Competitors choose which make of truck they compete in, even if it isn’t the same brand they drive for work. The competition requires navigating an extremely challenging course which places a premium on visibility, truck performance, maneuverability and ease of handling...
