MEXICANS' TRUCKS * USA - FMCSA substantially met safety criteria
Washington,DC,USA -The Trucker, by LYNDON FINNEY -2 Sept 2009: -- The Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Transportation said in a report released today that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) had either met or “substantially” met the safety criteria set forth in a 2002 appropriations act related to Mexico-domiciled motor carriers potentially operating beyond narrow commercial zones along the border... The report, required by the 2002 act, was released today... The OIG cited two areas where it felt FMCSA had not totally met the criteria — having adequate capacity at the southern border to conduct meaningful inspections and having sufficient databases to allow safety monitoring of Mexican carriers and drivers...
* Should Mexican trucks be allowed throughout US?
New York City, New York, USA -The Huffington Post, by Steve Parker -September 4, 2009: -- The recent release of a Transportation Departments inspector general's office government audit has brought to a head, once again, an issue which ignites deep feelings and loyalties in the best people... The claim by those opposing the rule is that the trucks are not inspected properly and regularly, at least to US standards, and that their sheer number will overwhelm already-overwrought border crossings... Those in favor say that it's only fair because US trucks have access to Mexico. There's also a sometimes-not-so thinly-veiled charge of racism tossed at the people against instituting the law. I know this to be true because more than a year ago we posted a blog piece saying those against the rule were making some good points; hence, according to comments from some visitors here, I was "racist"... Admittedly, much of my opposition to this program is based on my own observations and experiences, having traveled to and through Mexico many times... From appearance alone, really the only evidence I have to go on, trucks and buses in Mexico are in a different, maybe minor league, than their US cousins...
