* Europe - HAVEit Project aims to make future trucks safer - It suggested trucks of the future could be equipped with an on-board digital co-driver to assist the human behind the wheel

Brussels,Belgium -The Road Freight News -7 August 2009: -- A European Truck Accident Causation Study survey has revealed 47 percent of all truck accidents take place in monotonous situations with vehicles traveling in the same direction... Consequently, the HAVEit project (short for Highly Automated Vehicles for Intelligent Transport) is aiming to develop a virtual co-driver that responds to both traffic conditions and drivers' needs... It suggested trucks of the future could be equipped with an on-board digital co-driver to assist the human behind the wheel... External sensors would evaluate traffic situations, scan lane markings, road signs, and current road conditions... These would be combined with an internal system monitoring the driver and interprets his or her needs... Two trucks are currently undergoing a digital transformation at Volvo Technology in Sweden... * South Africa - Truck market to start recovering in 2010: Mercedes-Benz

Sales of extra heavy commercial vehicles were down 57% year-to-date at the end of July compared with 2008, with heavy commercial vehicles down 44,7%, and medium commercial vehicles 44,4%...


* Italy - Iveco drives longer trailer concept in the UK

Turin,Italy -Road Transport (UK) -6 August 2009: -- Iveco has thrown its weight behind the adoption of longer semi-trailers with the launch of a UK focus group to examine the potential of the new designs... So far two operators - Chamberlain Transport and DHL - are involved, along with trailer manufacturer Montracon and the FTA... Representatives from the four members in the group attended a meeting in Turin, Italy earlier in the year where they heard the experience of German firms that have been engaged in a widespread trial since 2007... They were also told about a similar scheme that the Italian truck manufacturer has launched in its home country. There, Progetto Diciotto (Project Eighteen), has seen six logistics operators conducting on-road trials of eight semi-trailers, each with an overall length of 18m, since May...
