TRUCKMAKERS' NEWS * USA - Future Navistar trucks already being built in UK
Wakarusa,IN,USA -WSBT, by Dustin Grove- -Aug 6, 2009: -- When President Obama delivered remarks Wednesday from the factory floor at Monaco RV in Wakarusa, he told the crowd his announcement was, “a historic commitment to innovation" … The electric battery-powered delivery trucks will eventually roll off the assembly line at Monaco RV thanks to the hands of American workers, but the idea actually came from across the Atlantic. Monaco’s parent company, Navistar International, announced it will build the vehicles in a joint venture with Modec (SEE VIDEO), a company founded in 2004 in the United Kingdom. It’s been making this truck since 2007... The all-battery powered truck’s top speed is 50 miles per hour and can last 100 miles before recharging... The $39 million grant awarded to Navistar to build the trucks calls for 400 to be manufactured in Elkhart County. Navistar executives say the project could call for 700 workers, including employees and suppliers... * Daimler releases 2010 emissions surcharges
Portland,OR,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Jim Mele -Aug 6, 2009: -- Freightliner and Western Star trucks powered by Detroit Diesel DD13, DD15 and DD16 engines will carry a $9,000 surcharge in 2010 to cover the cost of new emissions control systems, according to Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA)... On the medium-duty side, DTNA said today that its trucks powered by the Cummins ISC8.3 will have a surcharge of $7,300, and those equipped with the Cummins ISB6.7 a surcharge of $6,700. Navistar has said that its proprietary MaxxForce medium-duty engines will see a $6,000 emissions-related surcharge next year... Although DTNA also plans to offer the Cummins ISX15 heavy-duty diesel in addition to its own engines, the 2010 surcharge for that option has not yet been finalized, according to a company spokesperson. That announcement is expected within the next few weeks...
* Class 8 truck sales gain again
New York,NY,USA -Fleet Owner -Aug 6, 2009: -- Class 8 truck orders for North America increased in July for the second consecutive month, but were still down 37.3% compared to July 2008, according to FTR Assocs... Heavy-truck orders for the U.S., Canada, Mexico and export totaled 9,002 units last month, a 9.6% increase over June orders, the industry analyst group reported... The two-month improvement has brought the annualized Class 8 order rate up to 108,024 units, according to FTR...
